My son and cousin's son got drawn for Hiwassee juvenile on 9/17 and 9/18. We have never been there. Any advice would be appreciated. We will probably go up the weekend before to scout. It looks like there are a lot of fields so this may be a hunt the hunters deal.

Any advice on places to camp close by either primitive or campgrounds? Are there any located on the lake within boat distance of the refuge? My son is 8 and tickled to death when I told him this afternoon.

Is there a central check in station? Will they send us a map or something in the mail?

Congrats to your son! I live about 10 miles from the refuge and I am hunting there for the first time also this year. I would say that grasshopper creek campground probably is one of your best bets as it has a boat ramp and all is one of the closest campgrounds with water access. For maps I've been using https://www.tn.gov/twra/topic/wildlife- ... a-wma-maps. As far as central points, I talked with Mr. Jackson from twra yesterday and he told me that they will have an area setup I believe on priddy lane to weigh and age the deer. You can check in online also. I have his number somewhere I wrote down at work and I'll pm it to you in case you want to call. If you need any bow repairs while your here I recommend harvest archery in Dayton Tn which is only about 15 minutes away. Dayton also has pretty good restaurants and is smaller and less traffic than Cleveland. For food and you like Mexican Delias on Hwy 27 (20-25 min from grasshopper) for Mexican. For bbq there is momo's on 27, and for American there is Jacob Myers (little high but food is good). Also you have Cleveland which is about 20 minutes and has all your major things.

If you do stay at grasshopper I will tell you there is only one little store in Birchwood that has drinks and pizza and some bait. Nothing much there so if your going to cook bring it in with you because your closest grocery is Dayton or Cleveland.

Bluewater campground is also right on the lake but a few miles up the river in Dayton. Very nice with clean showers however.
