simplest AR-15?

i've never fired a civilian model AR. most of those pictured that i see have attachment points for every thing from lights/sights to infra-red and grenade launchers. i'm finally wanting an AR-15, but i don't want it covered in crap that just makes it heavier to carry/expensive. i "may" put a scope or red dot on it, but that will be it. i'm looking for as light as possible and snag-free.

You can get them with slick sided uppers. Basic Anderson and ati flattops can be bought brand new usually for around $349 before tax and shipping if you shop around. Really depends on what you want to spend. PSA also runs some pretty good deals on their stuff and it would be a step up, just have to watch. Sometimes they run deals on a lowers and uppers separate that ends up being very reasonable too, just have to keep an eye out on their site.

Just buy an AR and don't add all the accessories. Lots of good ones out there. PSA would be just fine.

Palmetto State Armory makes a fine rifle for not much money. I have several and they are excellent.

The good thing about an AR is it is very customizable. Several like PSA are lower end and are just fine. I am a big BCM fan. You can always find used ones like Colt, Sig, etc... Look around online and see what you like in your price range.

The good news is that AR-15's are a Mil-Spec. There are different variations such as M4 or A2

I would suggest if you are going to use optics, you get a flattop that doesn't have a carry handle and a tall front sight post.

The price of AR's is down right now. I'd buy it before the next "emergency" hits.

I'd look at the PSA stuff. Get a 16" or 18" barreled flat top with some flip up iron sights on there just to get going. You can always add a red dot or low power scope later and retain the iron sights for "backup". You will probably want to add some sort of sling mounts as well. All depends on if you want a single point or more traditional 2-point sling. An upgraded trigger might be another option later. Tons of options out there.

Most of the less expensive ones come bare bones. The Tacticool guys put a bunch of cheap crap on them so they can look like "operators" in the wild, even though a 100 yard sprint down the alley would most likely kill them before an enemies bullet.

PSA is really decent stuff for the money.

I have a DPMS Panther. Put a Romeo 5 on it and that thing will shoot holes inside holes.
That brand is considered low end but it's never let me down.

if i was going to run a 100 yard dash, there better be an ambulance following me. i can still hunt up in the mountains all day, but it takes me a bit to get up yonder... i like Iron Mountain in Shady Valley, or the Pond Mountain Wilderness area above Hampton.

The Colt 6920 standard ended about 10 years ago. Many many companies make an AR that meet or exceed whatever standard people think the 6920 sets.

If you go with a dot scope. Go with a scope that provides red and green dot. the extra cost is worth it.

Simplest is best. I'm not a fan of the AR system. It's weak in so many respects. But when u get a good one don't bolt on a lot of junk. Get a good optic of choice. Site it in properly. Load up on quality mags and a boat load of them. Keep them in multiple locations if possible. Get a good sturdy case for transport. People tend to load them up with tons of accessories. A sling is the MINIMUM u need. A flashlight could be nice but if you know how to use a handheld in conjunction no need.
