Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

im sure there are bigger than him running the wolf around there.ive seen a couple of bruisers running around over the years.still a stud.wish they would do a draw hunt like the island does

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

anyone heard whether they are using a private company or someone like the USDA wildlife services?

I had some hopes for a draw hunt of some sort, but it doesn't surprise me about how they are handling it, since they can do the shooting at night while the park is closed to normal visitors.

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

Wow awesome buck! Couple years back I remember them catching some guys bow hunting out there.

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

Wonder why they wouldn't trap them and take to other wma's or national forests

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

Great buck! I also wish they'd do some kind of draw archery hunt. I wonder if they're instructed to kill any sex deer or X number of each.

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

You can see deer in the fields along Mullins Station road on the north side of the park every morning and evening. They have zero fear of cars or even people so long as they are 100 or 200 yards away. Never seen a buck like this though.

I 2nd that! I would definitely support that!!!!
I keep hearing they are going to have to do something.

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

they could raffle bow hunts off and make more money for the park

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

What entity decided on this course of action to control the deer population? They could do the same thing on Pres. Island but I am so glad they don't. All they would need to do is close a portion of the most rural portion of the park for bow hunters for a couple of weeks during the rut. Instead they have to pay some sharpshooters to execute deer in a non fairchase manner. Frankly, I hope the neighbors complain of the gun fire. There's enough of that in Memphis.

I did find this:

After reading this article again it's obvious they are more concerned about the publics perception about hunting aka Bambi than a common sense practical solution. Apparently the public is less sensitive about shooting a deer in the head at night by a sharpshooter than killing one fairchase with a bow. Go figure!

Re: Shelby Farms Deer (Memphis)

When the conservancy took over the park they were informed that they would need to cull the herd every now and then. For some reason that information went unheeded, as I knew it would.
Now they have a problem that is getting WAY more PR news coverage than they want.
Earlier this week a deer from the park caused a bad crash on Wolf River Blvd.
As I drove by I just shook my head in disgust.
There is a LOT more to this issue that most folks don't know about, but I will keep my tongue under control here for the sake of civility, and this isnt the place to bring those issues to light.

There was a guy on the Tndeer Facebook page, about a month ago, that had posted some pics of some big deer killed off of a private lease near the prison somewhere close to shelby farms

They're not quite as dead when you shoot them with a bow as with a rifle. Thought everybody knew that.

What about the terror the animal experiences when they hear the rifles report? That's got to be more cruel than an arrow. ;)

Good point. They should not do anything and let them die of old age the way I hope to. :tu:
