Wanted to get a few opinions on setting up on the back side of tree. I have a couple thoughts on it: One would be that setting up on back-side allows good cover to conceal any of your movement to approaching deer. The other would be that sometimes it is hard to get a good shot, especially to the right for a right-handed archer. So, see more deer with the possibility of fewer shot opportunities OR give yourself the best shot opportunities with the risk of being made...

Depends on situation? If no cover is available and I cant get high enough, backside of tree I will use. Every setup requires its own rules.

Thanks Winchester, makes sense. Should have had my good harness (but in a hurry and forgot) and had to use my back-up. The longer tether would've given me possibly enough space for the shot...

I hear ya, had to walk back about a hundred yards after leaving my tether in the back of the truck over the wknd. I used it to drag one out on Fri and forgot to put it back on my harness, luckily I had only gone about a hundred yards before I remembered it.

From 20 yards, 2 seater ladder stand from wal-mart. Shot 3 deer from this stand last year, and two this weekend.

Close-up to see camo mesh we attached to shooting rail.

Hunting from a TreeSaddle, I almost always have the tree I am hunting from between myself and where I expect to see deer.

I've been looking at the tree saddle and guido's web. I really like the concept! What kind of climbing and footrest set up do you have? I was thinking the climb paws for lightweight and quiet. But I would like to hear others input on what they use.

TNGunhunter - that is a pretty sweet set-up for xbow and gun, but may pose more shot issues with a compound than currently trying to shot around the tree. :) It is a great set-up for its purpose!!

I have a set of the climb paws. I bought them to use with my tree saddle for the same reasons you were thinking. They are quiet and lightweight but I have some concerns about them. I am a big guy and they didn't feel like they were very solid as a climbing system. If the tree has course bark it made them even harder to secure. If you get a bunch of them together they can be a challenge to keep all the straps untangled. I will probably use them as the first couple of steps along with my climbing sticks and hangon stands. They probably would be fine as the top layer for use with the tree saddle though.

I have one tree that I always hunt on the back side of the tree. The area between me and the bedding area is pretty open and the deer have to walk 200 yds or so and I am afraid they will bust me with that much area to walk. But the tree I hunt has plenty of cover on the "front side" so I can turn and see them coming from a long ways off.

I always end up on the back side of the tree but not intentionally. The deer seem to always come in from behind me no matter how I set up. I need one of those rear view mirrors they used to sell in the sportsman's guide. :)

Thanks Poser. I try to go as light as possible. I use a summit open shot which is pretty light for a climber. But I like the idea of being able to climb the exact tree I want, which is really hard with a climber. I think I might sell my climber and lock ons and try this kind of set up
