One of the problems with trees and screw in steps is when they are removed. The hole that is left leaves the tree open to insects and decay.Also the tree loses value for possible timber use.If you use them on YOUR trees and leave them in the step seals the hole . This minumizes some of the problems.

Depends on the type of tree, I use the treehopper bit, and after drilling, some trees will seal up quickly while others stay open for months!
