Took a new rifle out yesterday to sight in/break-in barrel.Noticed when cycling round into the chamber it was sticking some, the rifle is a Remington 700,which are usually smooth.I checked spent case after firing and notice a scratch on the case. Question is this:what is most likely cause? Burr on the magazine box??

Does it only scratch when loading from the magazine?
Does it scratch when you just put a cartridge in the chamber and close the bolt?

What he said ^^^

Feed some shells from the magazine, but stop the bolt as soon as the shell is free from the magazine feed lips. Take the shell out, and see if the marks are there.

I had a friend with a 700 Buckmaster 7Mag. His spent cases were getting stuck in the chamber. His had a burr in the chamber. He polished it out, and that solved the problem.

I disassembled and removed the magazine box, polished off the sharp edges. Tried another round and still getting the scratches,so it probably is in the chamber. What is best way to polish out the chamber myself or does this require a gunsmith?

Pictures. We need pictures of the scratches, their location on the case and the orientation of the case in the magazine and chamber.

Did you do as recommended and feed one from the magazine but stop short of the chamber?

Help us help you, OP.

What he said ^^

If it does have a burr in the chamber it can be polished out at home, provided you don't get carried away. The chamber needs to have some texture to it to help grip the case upon firing. Too smooth of a chamber puts more pressure on the bolt face.

Okay thanks for all the suggestions so far and a update of what I've tried. Tried loading shell with not putting it in mag,so no burr in chamber I guess. Smoothed out the mag lips and mag lips still getting the scratches. Marked shell at 12:00 and chambered took picture but didn't show up very well, but scratches are on the right slightly below mark probably 1/8 inch to right of mark. The scratch extends from the rear to half way up the black mark.
