What kind of scope would you buy if you were allowed to spend $600? The gun is a Ruger M77 .270. I've been looking online, and Zeiss seems to be in the lead. Just looking for some advice, or your personal review of a scope that you feel would be a nice match with my gun.

Zeiss Conquest or a Meopta Meostar R1. The Meopta is much better optically and the #4 reticle in the 4-12x40 that I have is the best reticle I have ever seen. It is a tad on the heavy side, but if you are looking for the best scope optically, the Meopta can't be beat for the money. The Conquest is no slouch. I have around 10 Conquests and have no complaints. Very solid scope optically and mechanically. Both have a great warranty to boot.

I just bought my 3rd Meopta Meostar 3-12X56. I couldn't wish for a better scope. There are a lot of scope for the money.
I have a Vari-X III and it's a good scope.
The Meopta is a great scope. Go to Cabelas.com and read the reviews.

Don't leave out sightron Big Sky and SIII or the nikon monarch and monarch golds. Keep in mind size, weight, tube size, and Objective? Don't just go buy the scope because of the name. Think about things like, what does a 30mm tube get me? What does a 50mm or even a 56mm objective get me? Both of these things add weight to the scope. The large objectives cause you to lift your head off the stock so you will have to think about raising the comb. Are they really worth it? Think about what the scope is going to be used for. Yea, you'd love to be able to make a 600yd shot with it but realistically, all of you shots are going to be between 20 yds and 200yds. Most will be in the 80 to 100 yd range. You may find that a nikon monarch 2.5-10x42 is all the scope you need and it only costed you $300. I'm not saying don't buy a zeiss or kahles, I am just saying think about what you need before you pick a brand. That brand may not have the exact setup that you are looking for. Also, look on ebay. You will find some really good deals.

The purpose will mainly be for hunting. But also for some target shooting. Most shots will be within 200 yards, but I want a scope with good clarity. Even with my Leupold rifleman I have trouble seeing my bullets on paper @ 100. Some shots during gun season can be quite long, my longest is 382 yards.

All scope brands mentioned above have great clarity. You won't be disapponted with any of them. I had a VXI and I did not care for the clarity of it either. I will never buy another luepold less than a VXII ever again. I think once you step up into the $300 class scope and above, there is a huge jump in clarity. You just have to decide exactly what you want as far as a setup and then see who has it and compare those brands. Unfortunately, there aren't too many places around that carry ziess, meotpa, kahles, sightron, nikon, and leupold so you can do an actuall side by side comparison.

Another scope you may consider is the Bushnell 6500.

I left out the Sightron SII Big Sky. I have 2 of them, and am very impressed with them. They are also lighter than the Euro scopes. I have a 3-12x42 and a 3-9x42, they easily beat out any Leupold I have ever looked through, but YMMV.

Well, looky there Kimberman. We may not agree on the effective ethical range of a 44 mag but we do agree on scopes. If you look at my first post here, I mention the Sightron Big Sky. I don't own one but I do own an SII and an SIII which are killer scopes. Sightron is a sleeper brand. I got lucky on both of my scopes because they were being discontinued and I got them well below retail. I am hoping someday to setup a bean field rifle with the Sightron Big Sky 4-16x42.

I have a Meopta Meostar R1 1.5-5 on my Sig 556. You can easily see, well at least I can easily see, bullet holes at 100 yds when the scope is set on 5x. I work a lot in the Clinton, Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs area. If you want to take a look thru them just send me a PM. I don't know of any retailers in the area where you can compare them to other scopes. I'll also bring some of my Conquests if you want to compare them.
