Ok after you all got me fixed up with my brass not wanting to chamber in my savage I got some loads made up and went to the range. Here is my best results
Powder H380 45 grains
Cci primers
Nosler 150gr partition
Bullets set at what book recommended is max oal 2.800
100 yard 3 shot group
1.1 inch group was the best
So what would you all do next ? Adjust bullet depth? If so what increments should I start with .020?

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

How far apart were your powder charge weights for this test? Normally you'd start out as long as you're willing to go and work shorter.

Yes I miss wrote that I have started out far as I can set bullet at max 2.800 so should I work shorter? And my charges went in .5 increments from min to max charge

Personally, I would shoot 44.8, 44.9, 45.0, 45.1, and 45.2 grain loads with 5 shots each.
Ok I will try that and see what kind of groups I can get

Also keep in mind that when you seat the bullet deeper with powder loads you've already tested, the pressure goes up. Back off the charge and work back up with each change in seating depth to be safe.

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

load .010 off lands you may wind up with a 2 shot rifle

i recommend 42.7 grains re 15 and a 120 nbt .010 off lands

if you want a hotter load work up to a max charge re 15

if you are dead set on 150 grain bullet i recommend imr 4064 or re 17 or 19

good luck

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

I'd find an accurate charge before trying different seating depths. I'd go with DA's 0.010 off and load in 0.2 grain increments maybe from 44 to 45.2 grains or so and see where your best node is, then play with depths

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

I like to have my rifles loaded with a bullet of a particular weight and manufacture. If I want a heavier or lighter bullet its a great reason to get another rifle.

Having said that, I have a 280 that is shooting 140 gr Accubonds and Partitions into sub moa every time. So when I picked up a 7mm08, I messed around with a lot of dfferent weights and quite frankly was not having a lot of success. The chamber is tight and the magazine is made so that you either go to a 2-shot rifle or stick to SAAMI specs for length. At firs, i was really hating this 7mm08.

Then I tried the DA recipe for 120 gr Ballistic tips. Some observations from that experiment

1. Accuracy came out of nowhere and settled into sub-MOA groups.
2. Recoil is next to nothing.
3. Bullets are plentiful and not expensive.
4. So far the recipe appears to care not a darn about primer choice
5. DA kills deer out to crazy ranges with this recipe
6. If you keep a sharp eye out SPS sells special color 120's that are a very cool blue. (I think its a friendly wave at Mr. Barnes products)
Here, aren't these pretty?

such nice neat boxes also

Give the 120's a try and report back.

So you all are suggesting the 120 BT how well do they work on deer ? I know shot placement means everything but what kind of damage? Do you all get any exit hole?

oh my lord I may not get to it tonight but i can post all the pics you want

i have killed east 50 deer with it

from mv 2725 fps 3295 fps 3595 fps

in 7/08 24 inch bbl 40 grains re 15 2725 fps .010 off

my son has killed several close and to 150 yds
i killed a buck 279 yds 12 pointer field dressed dang near 170 lbs live over 200 lbs punched both shoulders drt

42.7 gave me 2869 fps .010 off

son killed 305 yds drt
step daughter 286 ish yds pass through ran may be 40

3295 fps 280 rem 26" bbl killed several up close and a dog

3595 in 7 saum is on the ragged edge killed 30 yds and 50 yds both pass through

it is a great bullet

however i have killed several with a 110 barnes ttsx 140 e tip 150 etip 140 accubond 140 partitions 160 accubonds 140 berger vld 168 vld

many ways to skin a cat or kill a deer

i recommend any of the above bullets along with others

you want better accuracy i was just offering my 2 cents on how to achieve you goal

i load differently than most

i find a good powder to get good speed
work up to a safe max charge
play with seating depth for accuracy usually dont have to get past ,010 off
go kill deer

why a max charge why have a 7 mag to achieve 7/08 speed go get a 7/08

those 7/08 loads above are my "youth" and "youth +++" loads with the 120 nbt i know what they do at higher speeds in other calibers dead is dead so i have never loaded them hot in 7/08 i feel you could get 3100 fps easy with them

my 140 7/08 loads are hot

good luck bud have fun

Thanks Deer Assassin
For all the info I will be ordering me some 120 real soon and see what I can get. One thing is for sure the 120 are a lot cheaper than the 150 partitions I was buying.

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

44.5 RL-15 and a 120 has worked for me in 3 different rifles (7.08).

It's also called the campfire load because most everyone shoots that load on 24hr.

Make your coal = mag length (or if mag length is greater then chamber length, start with a coal that kisses lands @ .010" in)
Start at 43.5 and work to 44.5

Normally mag length is less than chamber, so load to mag length.

If that is the case with your gun, loading to .010" off or .010" into lands does not matter - unless you want to shoot a single shot at a time.

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

I know my Brownings have a magazine length of 2.860", so that is my coal in those.

I think my Kimber is at 3", so that coal is a kiss into the lands.

Don't have my notes near to let you know my Kimber's coal.

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

That is your way Lade.

A man that has 2-4 in the belly and one in the chamber may not like that.

I am teaching to think for themselves about reloading.

One needs to consider my post above.

Also Lade,

I have been reloading for 25+ years.

I don't think your experience with deer hunting is but 10. Reloading experience is near 5.

Your 100,000+ posts suggest you know more than I.

Just a thought my friend.

Love you Lade-

Judd

judd

i didnt mean any thing buy it just saying if you seat out past mag capacity it does not make it a single shot you can have two.

there are many ways to achieve a goal.

been killing for 16 years 253 dead deer I do know what works and what dont reloading for about 11 and certainly no expert by any means I learn things every month from a lot of great folks here and 24 hour
however i know what works for me and i do know it may not fit another hunters needs

100k post just means i hated being married to my ex and had time on my hands i have slowed down a lot here latly

no way I know more than you bud IMO you are my go to smokeless ml guy you knowledge in that field over whelms me and i know you were the first i texted when i killed at 292 yds with my ml you have helped me so much

take care I got to get that way and buy you a beer

Re: Savage 7mm08 test results

Lade-

It's all good. I'll gladly take you up on that beer.

I'm packing up turkey stuff fixing to head to the lease.

I'm only going to load one shell in my shotgun, just for you.

I'll keep another in my pocket just in case... :)

Good luck buddy.
