Ruger Compact .260

Anybody have one of these in the .260 ? I stumbled up on a spotless one at the local shop today. Considering getting it for my wife. Laminate stock, stainless barrel.. it has a Simmons atec scope on it, which will get tossed.

Whats the fair market price on one of these right now? its spotless and less than a year old.

I would guess If it is near new(but used) a good buy would be about $450 and a average price would be around $500 maybe 550 a little high. However it should pretty much be the perfect bolt action carbine for deer, coyotes, or whatever you/she might hunt with it. The .260 is one of the best if not the best all around cartridges imo. Of course it is a round that is best utilized by a reloader. PH

Yeah the reloading thing isn't a problem. I think he had 599 on the gun. I may try to get him down a little on the price.

I have a M77 MkII in .260. I love this gun. The best thing about this gun is the recoil. I can watch the bullet hit thru the scope. I've had it 2 years and killed 4 or 5 deer and 2 hogs with it. I was shooting factory federal fusions 139gr seirra game kings and they made a mess to say the least! I would not hesitate a bit to let a child/women/small framed person shoot it.

I've tinkered with some handloads, and as of right now, I'm shooting 129 gr hornady sst's. From factory loads, to 3 other bullet manufacturers, honestly, it shoots them all well, but the sst's were the best. I can't remember what and how much powder. I can get it though if you want it.

I just remembered, it DID NOT shoot the rem core lokts well at all. If I remember corectly, about 3" was as good as I could get with them at 100yds. All others were 1" or less with the sst's being bout the size of a quarter.

It's my favorite gun. I bought one new at a show 2 years ago for $600, then spent around $200 for scope and mounts. If you can get one for anything under $500 with scope, jump all over it!

I ran into a deal at a pawn shop for a 243 compact with an old Redfield scope for $300. That was almost a sin, but I prefer the 260. Still, with 3 grandaughters and a grandson, I need a couple Compacts.

My 260 shoots great with a load of 41 gr IMR 4350 and 140 gr Hornady INterlock. It shoots the 120 gr Nosler BT pretty well, too, and I have a really nice 85 gr coyote load that kicks like nothing. I've shot quite a few deer with it in 2 seasons, and all were one shot kills, though not all were bang-flops.

BTW, the 16.5" barrel will loose you some velocity, but not as much as people normally expect. I get about 150 fps less than the published velocities. I found that the max load of IMR 4350 got about the same velocity as the charge halfway between starting and max loads, and the slightly reduced loads shot more accurately.

He has it listed for 599.00 but he said he would let me have it for 600 out the door with a box of shells.

If I get anymore work this week, I'm going to go ahead and get it.

I had a Rem Model Seven .260 that I sold/traded last year. This particular rifle had a recoil comparable to my 30.06 and was loud. I would not want a child, or small woman, shooting that rifle.
