Do you guys spray your fall plots before discing? We always have, but one member says we don't need to, just disc and plant. Would love to save the money, but want to do it right.

If you are going to disc anyway, spraying would be a waste unless it is to thick to disc.

I guess I should clarify. I was referring to spraying a couple of weeks out from discing not when you disk. I like to kill out the weeds. Ive done it both ways though and havent had terrible trouble without spraying.

roundup basically does no good on disked ground, it has to be sprayed on green veg.

spraying 15 or so days before disking will make disking easier

every time you disk, you are bringing new/different weed/grass seeds to the surface

I understood exactly what you meant. Unless you have problems with something like Johnson grass, spraying will kill everything that is green and so will discing. What comes back will be from the seed and neither Roundup or discing will stop that. If anything cutting up the ground will plant more of the seed and more will grow back as apposed to no till planting. So the money spent on spraying is wasted unless the growth is to thick to do a good job of discing. Johnson grass will grow from a rhizome and discing will cut them up into smaller pieces and a new plant will grow from each piece so spraying first will be better for that.

We're gonna spray. Figure it's only a total of 1+ acre in scattered plots so it won't be that much and there will be greater chance of cleaner plots. I'll sleep better at nite with the better safe than sorry approach. The weeds in the plots now are about knee high. We'll spray this weekend and disc/plant first part of September. Now we've got to turn our attention to finding a couple of new members. Thanks for the input.

Spray first....
This kills not only plant matter but any above ground seeds.

Wait 2 weeks for optimum kill and then disk.

You can plant at this point and do fine, BUT....

If you are planting perinnial plots...for optimum results...

After your first kill off....wait 2 weeks....disk... wait another 3 weeks for new growth to emerge and spray again...
then plant.

We are spraying plots tomorrow since the water has went back down.

If the plots have been flooded is there anything to spray?

Sprayed about 1/2 of the plots yesterday. Quit when it turned from fun to work, about 4 pm. Glad we're spraying, after liming the plots this spring and discing the lime in, a whole new crop of weeds had emerged. I think it would have been a mess to just turn the live weeds over with a disc.
