What is the best way to hook a crawdad for bank fishing for smallmouth in a river? Been fishing the Holston river in Kingsport and crawdads are just about the only thing we can get them to hit right now. Also what size & kind of hooks to use and what sinker? splitshot or bullet.

Hook them from the bottom side of the tail Between the cephalothorax and the abdomen. You will obviously need a hook shank wide enough so that you have plenty of hook left to get a good set once you push it through. The eye of the hook should clear the end of the tail. Use just enough split shot to sink the crawdad to the bottom. Give your line a jerk every now and then to keep him from hiding under rocks.
