i was lookin at molly resin to put on my 870. the finish on the gun is ruind and i would like to redo it because it was the first gun my father bought me. I have never attempted to refinish a firearm. And was wondering if i would be better off paying someone to do this for me or if was straight foward enough that i could do it?

Are you asking about refinishing the wood parts or attempting to do the Moly Resin yourself???????????

If just the wood parts, it is relatively easy. Most supplies can be had from Wally World or a local hardware store.

A can of finish stripper, sand paper, steel wool, tack cloth. I prefer Tung Oil as a finish, it dries in a deep, rich, satin finish and holds up to the elements wonderful. Easy to work with also.

Pretty much only a few choices you have, cold or hot blueing OR some form of an electro plated finish such as the Moly Resin. I don't know your range of talent but after reading alittle about the process...................I personally would leave that job to the professionals.

It sounds like it takes an aweful lot of prep work and some special equipment to apply the material and finish the job.

Moly resin isn't that hard if you have the right stuff to do it. I refinished an 870 with it and had great results. I sandblasted the metal parts and then used an airbrush to apply the moly resin. You have to heat the parts after applying the moly resin to cure it. You can do this in your oven. This is an 870 that I redone about 2yrs ago. If you decide to give it a try and run into problems, just PM and I will try to talk you through it.
