My daughter is 16 and wants to get her 1st turkey. Looking for recommendations on 20 gauge shells and recommendations on choke setup. She's shot a few deer so recoil not an issue and trust that turkey can get close enough for a shot. Before I start buying a bunch of different ammo (too much $$), wanted a few recommendations. Thanks all...

Federal TSS #9 and a Carlsons non ported .575 turkey choke tube is what I shoot out of 4 different 20 gauge shotguns that I have. That is where I would start as it gives a great hunting pattern. My 11 year old hunts with this same combination so I feel it would be no problem for your daughter! Good luck!

One more thing to think about if you are worried about recoil at all. Get her a limbsaver recoil pad, it slips right on and most certainly makes a difference with the recoil if that is a concern!

Just be careful with those as they change the LOP most of the time making it to long for some kids

My daughter and I have killed several turkeys with Fiocchi 2 3/4 7.5 golden pheasant lead loads. It's a very dense forgiving pattern.

Def Fed TSS #9. Recoil is very reasonable in an ultralight 20g. (I may be biased, since I switched from a 10g that I had used for 20 years prior).

Not sure if they still make the 'reduced recoil' loads which were 1000 fps any longer. They were available the first year of production. When I resupplied last season after turkey season ended, I could only find the 1100 fps loads in #9. I still have 10 of the 1000 fps shells, and am saving them for my 12 y/o daughter to use. My son and I will be using the 1100 fps version this spring.

And don't have any reservations about using the 1000 fps shells... between me and my kids, we took 13 toms in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. No misses and only one loss when my son centerpunched a strand of barbwire 4ft from the end of the barrel. Most kills were in the 15 to 30yd range. One oops at 52 yards, but he dropped like a sack of potatoes.
