Ok, working on a friends gun and I need some advice.
It is a Mossberg 835. Not that it matters, but it doesn't have to match the beautiful wood or nothing. ;)

I cut the stock off 1/2" so it would fit better.

Of course now the recoil pad is larger around than the stock.

What is the best way to trim the excess off so it will fit better and not stick out all the way around the butt without it looking like total crap ?

Tape off the stock and use a belt sander. Be careful, you can use sandpaper on a block.

Take a pen with the pad put back on and mark around it to give an outline of the stock and then remove and sand down close to the marks, them reinstall and finish sanding.

Ruger don't laugh, but I put a belt sander in a vice and use it like that. Seems like I get a little more control that way.

Bingo,

I use duct tape, it holds up better in case you have an accident...............:0

what he said. you can also use a bench mounted disk sander if you know someone who has got one, maybe a woodworker in your area. if you are going to be working on more rifles in the future, it may pay to buy a recoil pad fixture for about 40 bucks.

Ditto

Do be carefull esp watch which way you turn the stock, real easy to taper the pad the wrong way in a hurry with a belt sander, while trying to keep it away from the stock.

They make tools (fixtures, really) for this. Search YouTube; last fall I watched a video of using one. I think it was in the gunsmithing series from Midway USA.
