Ive had a rough year with bullet performance and accuracy with my $12.50 per box Federal 150 grain soft points so I decided to try reloading. I asked about some other powders in another thread but ended up going with Hodgons H4831SC on the advice of a good friend of mine. He shoots Remy 700 .270 ADL with 150 grain NBT with 47.3 gr IMR 4831.

All I could get was the 140 gr bullets and the Hodgons H4831SC powder. Tried his load and this is the 9th through 12th shots. Had to adjust scope down about 3" from my previous factory ammo. I HAVE NEVER SHOT A 3 SHOT SAME HOLE GROUP BEFORE TONIGHT. I dont know if I will ever buy another box of ammo at the store.

4 shot group 50 yds. gonna work on it some more tomorrow.

back of target to make sure it was three holes. Moved scope 1/2" to left for fourth shot.

the 47.3 grains seemed low to me after reading some other folks loads on the net. I dont know what fps is but Ive seen deer he's shot with the 150 gr NBT at 47.3 grains IMR 4831 powder and its does some damage. I would like to know fps but dont have acces to chrono. Hey DA, any where to calculate velocity with barrel length, bullet, and powder load?

Sounds like your hooked! Good shooting.

Like DA said it sounds like you got room to expand. Just keep an eye on the primers. Once they flatten out, you are about max'd out on pressure.

If you're shooting 47 gr H4831sc, you're 11-12 grains low.

You should be able to hit 58-59 grains with 140's.

I shot two deer this weekend with this load. I wish I had pics of wounds but do not. First deer was spike shot at 40 yds broadside with me sitting on ground. Entrance in left shoulder. Exterior wound was not visible unless you pulled hair back to look for it, was the size of a .270 bullet perfectly round. Entrance interior wound inside rib cage was golf ball sized. Exit wound interior and exterior on rib cage was slightly larger than golf ball. Deer went 40 yds and fell. Major blood trail prolly 5 feet wide. Deer bleed out both sides. Double lung heart shot and one lung gone and other half gone.

Second deer doe 100yd shot with me sitting on ground. Entrance again on left shoulder and not visible unless you pulled back hair. Entrance wound inside rib cage slighly larger than golf ball. Both exit wounds slightly larger than golf ball. Double lung heart shot that absolutely devastated both lungs. No piece of lung matter larger than 1/2" by 1/2". Deer stood on back legs at impact and flipped on over straight backwards and was dead when she hit ground.

Congrats on the Deer, Feels good to get em with self rolled ammo.

Which 140gr bullet did you use??

Nice 30-30 load. Just kidding. :)

As I stated above, you are way low if you've told us the right components.

All my books list a starting load around 55 grains with your components.

Tread carefully because you are more than 10% less than recommended.

Exactly the right components. CCI LR primers. Once fired Federal brass. 140 gr NBT bullet. 47.3 GR Hodgons H4831SC. 3.745".

The guy I have hunted with since I was 10 has killed hundreds of deer witht his same load except he uses IM4831. Im new to reloading. Is there a danger by being more than 10% low on recommneded loads?

From what I have read, too low powder measure and you run the risk of having the bullet being lodged in the barrel.

Yep. Or detonation.

Probably won't happen with your load, but just as there is a reason for a max, there is a reason for a minimum.

I tend to look for powders that fill the case. Your load is around 77%.

Also, why handload the .270?

Get a 30-30 and be done.

Kind of like buying a corvette to commute, but walking instead.

Good luck though-
