"Acorns" in vertical tines are usually caused by damage to the growing antler. In essence, the velvet of the vertical tine was cut by a branch or briar. I've seen bucks with every vertical tine on one side with an acorn at the exact same height.

Got a wall hanger with four on one side, all at the same length. Have always wondered how much longer the tines would have been had they not had the bulge.
