well i broke the ram rod to my 45 cherokee which is very hard to find , i was wondering if i could take the ends off and use on one of those wood rods like at lowes ,not sure what kinda wood they are most likely pine . i think my ram rod was oak or maybe hickory . any suggestions ???????

The ends on the T/C ramrods that I have are glued on so I don't know how easy it would be to get them off the rod. I've bought ramrod tips from Track of the Wolf.

I would be very careful about choosing dowels. If it's hardwood and the grain is extremely straight with no runout it would probably be OK. I'd look around at the various muzzleloader supply companies to see what they offer.

Best thing to use is a fiberglass fish arrow if you have one laying around. I broke the ramrod in my 12 ga pedersoli double and I used the hardware off the broken one and put it on the fish arrow and I have been using it for 5 years now.

i tried that. it will swell in humid conditions and get stuck in the thimbles.

I once made a ramrod from a section of an old solid fiberglass catfishing rod. It had a slight taper to it, but it worked fine once I fitted brass ends on it.

Personaly i like a fiberglass one myself..To many times i have used a hickory one only to have it break and twice went into my hand.. Check this place out as you can get any one you desire..Hickory or Fiberglass and even Aluminum...

I got a buddy that made one out of a thick wall aluminum arrow shaft. he took a field point and blunted the end and screwed it into the insert for his bullet pusher.

hey all, i took some of your all advice and made my own .out of a brass gun cleaning rod i had,it worked perfect .its bit heavy but i want ever break it .plus i polished it up and it looks really cool in the gun.one end was already threaded so i can screw my cleaning tips in the other end i took the end off of the old broke ram rod and fitted it to the clean rod .to push the lead balls home .thanks for every ones input..
