OK...so i have a 1996 Polaris 500 4x4. It was working fine it had a little bit of problems holding the battery though. So i would have to pull start it but one time when i pull started it the string wouldnt go back in but it started and it started to make a loud clanking/grinding noise from around the pull string area just sitting there i wasnt riding it or anything but it started doing that out of nowhere? could i have broke the gears or what?? any idea will be appreciated! thanks.

When a pull string is out or gets accidently pulled on by your leg or something it will make a sound like that. It should stop when you get the pull rope fixed.

sounds like the recoil dogs remained out/engaged in the teeth of the crank. They may be rusty, corroded or have a broken return spring.

The noise you are hearing is the crank spinning the guts of the recoil around inside the cover.............not good for the recoil at all.

Remove the recoil cover and take a look see.
