Been taking my beagle out to train/ hunt. She was born in the early spring. Should I follow her at a distance or is it ok for her to follow me? She will lead some but won't hit the thick stuff on her own very often. What can I do to get her in there or will it just come when she "gets the scent?"

The best thing you could do would to put her with an experienced beagle. She is still young and after she runs a few rabbits it will come to her of what she is supposed to do.The best thing would probly be for you to get in the thick stuff and let her follow you and jump the rabbits for her,and then put her on the trail, after doing this for a few trips she should catch on to thats where they are.

Holy crap cecil! That's what my gurly hands were trying to avoid. Do beagles have a harder time in the wet or rain?

As long as its not pouring rain or raining, you will be fine.Actually they can track better when the ground is wet,the moisture holds the scent better.

You might try taking a rabbit and then using it as a training tool. Have someone make a trail like on the movie Where The Red Fern Grows. Put the dog on a leash and walk her around the scent and get used to following it.

Taking her on a hunt with an experienced beagle would be the easiest if she could keep up.... My granddad had a few dogs that needed encouragement to get into the thisk stuff so he would have to waid in first and then the dog would go and if it picked up a rabbit trail it was a race from there.....

I'd third letting her work with a good older dog(s) to get some training. Doesn't have to be your dogs, if you know someone else with a pack you could ask if they didn't mind you tagging along.

Your going to have to get right in the thick stuff yourself and help jump em. Like cecil said, best way would be to take with a experienced dog. I love a good misty today like today for good scent conditions. I went for 1.5 hours and had 4 good races then got soaked and called it a day.
