I'm in the market to buy a side by side and have always been a Honda fan but think I'm gonna give the Polaris Ranger a try. I had a Honda Pioneer 700 and the bed feels cheap and not as big. Is it worth the money to buy the 1000XP (82 hp) vs the 1000 (61 hp)? The Pioneer I had was plenty but part of me thinks if I'm spending the money go with the XP. Drove 412 miles to western Kentucky yesterday looking at a used one that was much nicer in the pics so I walked away. Had planned on buying a low hour/mileage used one but about to say the heck with it and buy a new one. Thoughts on 1000 vs 1000XP?

We have the xp. Never owned the other. Just depends on the package you want. Is the main differences. The regular is a just a base model if I remember correctly.

What about that CanAm Defender in the classifieds ? The Can Am I had was built great just didn't like the centrifugal clutch deal . The Can Am's. are great machines .IMHO I don't want another like the centrifugal clutch .

Just buy them both and see what you like. Sale the other one really cheap to me. 😁

We have the 1000, it's been over a year and I haven't seen a time I've needed the extra 20 hp. The only thing I don't like is the windshield squeaks quite a bit . I would also like the Polaris half doors but they are super expensive to buy.

They're good looking machines but just not a Can Am fan. No real reason as I have no experience with them but have others that did. Just a ford / Chevy thing I guess.

I have the Honda 700 and am considering an upgrade but will be going to the Honda 1000.
The folks I work for have a variety of Polaris units that I have full access to. I have used them but always defer to my Honda, My Honda is 10 years old and has only had regular service, the Polaris units are in and out of the shop multiple times a year. Worst to me is the belt drive. Why anyone would choose a centrifical belt drive over an automatic transmission is beyond me. Add to that the dependability of Honda products and you have a long life tool that is less costly to maintain. The final straw is the cost and reliability of service and parts.
For me it's Honda

I had a Yamaha rhino one time but everything else has been Honda. I still may end up with another Pioneer but 1000. The centrifugal clutch is the main thing everybody I know that has a Ranger complains about.

1999 300 4x4 - bought it new in July 99 and still have it.

The used Hondas seem cheaper than the other makes is what I've seemed to see .
Can you point me to them because I haven't seen that at all.

I'll add we have a kawasaki mule to. But we have had a 1000 pioneer 570 and 900 Ranger. We hated our pioneer. Everything about it.
Curious what you hated about the Pioneer? I loved the 700 I had. I have contemplated the mule too. My neighbor bought the pro FX HD edition and it's very nice. They also come with a 3 year warranty where I believe the others are 1 year.

Don't sell yourself short and just go balls to the wall and get one of those enclosed cab Polaris Xpedition ones that is like 1500cc lol
I bought a used 2019 polaris northstar 1000 XP crew last fall. The cab is nice, my heat works great, but having an issue with the ac not blowing cold air. Think there is an issue with the expansion valve. Then earlier this week my cooling fan quit working and melted the fuse for the fan to the fuse box without blowing the fuse. So its currently out of commission until I find the short that caused the issue.

Being our first side by side don't really have anything to compare to, but it has plenty of power.

We never got used to the transmission. The bed felt like a toy. We had the crew version and the roof over lapped to where you couldn't use the entire bed ( that's on us) just like our mule and ranger better. Main thing was the transmission. When checking cows or fences it couldn't decide in first or 2nd gear.

Have you considered a kei truck ? Heat and ac and plenty of off road for around 8k.
If u want to do everything a sxs can do get one with the front tires close to bumper for better ditch crossing. Other than that they climb hills like a goat.

I went from an 09' Polaris 700 xp to a 21'1000 xp highlifter . Polaris never done me wrong but i just putt around on the farm . I don't think you would miss the 20Hp at all unless you're racing the thing .

I have the 1000 xp Northstar crew cab and have been happy with it. Also have had a 500 and 900 model ranger and all have been good. Only problem I've had is the key switch on 900.

Have you checked I-69 motorsports the old Abernathys they had some decent rebates on the new ones a month or so ago.

I've got an XP1000 Sportsman. I like it, it's done all the things I wanted to do with it. I will say if I ever buy another one it's gonna have a/c on it. You can send the ecu to Gillomen and they can flash it to bump up the HP and take all the limiters out. Still keeps the factory warranty

Never had an issue with the transmission and is the main thing I like vs all the others that have the belts. I too don't like the roof all the way back over the bed. Be good keeping some rain out but would hamper it's full use.

My neighbors have one and have thought about them but the cab is tiny and cramped to me.

Yeah I've checked their website and messaged with them but was really thinking used at the time not new.

Did your 1000 pioneer not have the manual shift option?

Trust me, mine is a "premium" with power steering etc, but a SOHC.. PLENTY quick! Mine is governed to stutter at 57 I think. I see no reason to go faster.

It did. For what they cost imo shouldn't have to use it unless you just want to have fun. I liked the idea of their transmission. But reality just wasn't for us. A know people that love them. Just didn't fit for us. Take that with only replacing 1 belt total in 17 years on our orginal 610 mule just for maintenance purposes 2200 hours later. Its hard to not believe in the belt driven stuff now days.

The one I looked at in Kentucky had 220 hours and 3300 miles and had changed the belt. Was told there's somebody out there that makes belts aftermarket that are way superior so not too worried about that part if I go the Ranger route.

I was in the market last year about this time…. I chose the 1000XP because I got a good deal. My buddy got the regular 1000, it does fine for what we do. Hunting and farm work but I'm glad I got the XP. The extra 20hp comes in handy when you need it plus the extra upgrades.
I prefer the DOHC to SOHC.
For the Honda 1000 guys, if that transmission ever goes out you will change your mind about them. The main reason went with Polaris.
IMO Honda is behind others in the SxS market.
@Gravey Paducah Power Sports had the best deals I could find in a 3 state search.
Ask for Boz. I think they are offering 0% financing maybe.
