We decided to give the farm in Clay county a break before the rest of the family arrive and head to Overton. Same place Deer Assassin and I hunted last year. We spread out with the hope that my nephew gets a shot. Being thin blooded Floridians and judging by camera movement, we hit the woods at 730.
Within 20 minutes of being in the stand, my brother texts that he saw a buck chasing a doe and it was possibly headed in my direction. Looking down the ridge, I catch a glimpse of movement 100 yards away. Everything is quiet. I hear the slightest twig snap and there's a small doe right behind me, looking in direction of the movement I saw. She suddenly takes off the other direction. Without hearing or seeing anything, a doe pops out of the thick stuff and rockets up the hill. Then I hear some grunting and running and a buck stops 20 yards from me. He's motionless, staring in the direction of the doe. He stood there for a minute or more, just tempting me. I'm guessing it's a 6, but decent size body, hard to tell as it's right next to an old downed cedar. I mull him over for a few and decide to shoot. He was quartering too way more than I thought. He hunched up and turned to run down the slight hill, as he cleared some trees I shot again and he nose dived to a stop, barely 20 yards from stand. I wait a bit and get down to check it out and holy crap I was shocked. Ended up being cool racked 10 with the smallest of drops on passenger side, and one of the larger body deer I have seen in a while. Don't have a digital scale, but he was a smidge over 140 dressed. Had no plans on mounting, so wasn't concerned when dressing it. My brothers have worn me out, leading to reaching out for recommendations. Anyways, great day in the woods for sure, and I recovered one of the bullets. Just love hunting with the .44 magnum.
Tagged out, now there's one doe on the list.
