Got about half the plots ready for seed but rain forecast sure is dismal for Wayne Co. Chance of showers tomorrow but not enough to plant. Was hopeful for this coming weekend but the GFS model has backed off this morning. Unless something tropical happens it's looking like late September or October planting. Extra money I spent for brassica to be added to my clover mix was definitely a waste this year. Will continue prepping until done, then wait... At least it's not 100 degrees!

Agree. I suspect I won't get planted until October.
Got one field ready to plant and trying to decide what to do. Showing a good chance of rain tomorrow but nothing for the next week. This is in Putnam county.
Not looking so good in the 10 day for the northern plateau. I got two fields planted over the weekend but the hogs got to work on them pretty quick. Needing some rain.

Still not looking good in the 15-day GFS model. Maybe a little rain Tuesday, but not enough to plant by. The next shot will be the weekend of the 23rd and 24th.

If some of yal have access to a drill I would recommend it. Of course it could break and get very wet, but this is a year it could really shine and help a lot.

A drill is great, but still no use for it when it's as dry as it is. We're still waiting on our wheat to come in. Meanwhile, we will be oiling, greasing and calibrating the drill.

Just went and checked the clover I planted 7 days ago.(September 5th) It is coming up. A little rain today and hopefully enough in the future to keep it going.

So I disked several weeks ago and have had little to no rain. Will I need to disk again before I broadcast seed? Or just seed and cultipack?

Depends on if you have had rain on the turned ground. That tends to create a "crust" on the grounds surface. If no rain since disking, you should be good to go.
At this point I'd put it in freezer & hope for better conditions next year. I screwed up and had it added to my clover blend this year but it'll be a waste it looks like

I may end up freezing my radishes and turnips for next year at this point... really disappointed with zero rainfall in past 3w at my places. We even missed the small showers today

No we aren't even close to putting seed in the ground we are ready just way way way to dry with no predictions in the future now either. We buy our wheat from a guy down the road just take our wagon and he fills it up. Where are you getting it? And what is wheat running this year?

We get ours from a guy down the road as well. It was $11.50 per 50 lb bag. Not sure on store bought price.

I'm in a predicament. I bought a 50 lb bag of purple top turnips last year and we didn't use. I've kept it in my basement where it's cool and have a dehumidifier in there. I think we'll go ahead and plant it this year, even if in October. Maybe they'll atleast have the greens. I don't want to wait 2 years on this bag.
Probably won't be getting brassicas anymore. Maybe unless it's kale, which is supposed to be very winter hardy and doesn't have a bulb.

I'm just going to keep waiting. I sure hope this doesn't turn into last year, when the last week of October I was replanting everything that died from the drought or gotten eaten by Army Worms. It was barely out of the ground at the opening of MZ season.
Didn't get enough to hardly wet the dirt out of the rain today. Fall plots are this way so often.

Already a few small pockets of army worms here in southern Montgomery co. Good news is there is still a lot of green forage out there right now so maybe they will leave the fall plots alone.

I have my insurance policies... native browse bushhogged in Aug and ponds full of water... I'll be just fine even if it doesn't rain for another month... but it just pisses me off I may miss a growing season with no significant organic matter added to the topsoil.

it comes up great, makes a small plant, but won't make much of a bulb.
deer love it even planted late, no doubt... but about 1/20th the tonnage compared to late August planting.
just isn't worth the extra $$$$ in my mind if planted late tho... thats why my 100lbs of brassica seed is about to go in the freezer until next year.

I'm PISSED! Forecast for today at my place was a slight chance of rain with no more than 0.20" accumulation. That's not enough to plant, so I didn't. We got 1.80"! Son of a B....
