Planning my first food plots.

OK I just want your guys thoughts and advice.

I got a nice property with little to no hunting pressure and I want to plant two food plots.

I am thinking about trying out the biologic ... has anyone tried this. I like the clover plus and the permium perennial.

These are my plans:

1.Start of with getting a soil test done on both plot locations even though they are only about a quater of a mile apart.

2.Disk the plot and add need amounts of lime (late spring/early summer)

3.Remove weeds.

4.Disk again (early fall)

5.Wait for forcast rain and plant both plots, the clover and the premium and add fertilizer.

6.Pray for green to show.

7. Harvest the deer.

If I missing anything please let me know.
 
that sounds correct but if you're planning on a springtime plot you need to put some lime out now. You could actually put some winter wheat out now to start the deer comming to the plot to try and get a routine started. I've never tried the biologic other than the chickory blend and it grew great. good luck
 
I'm assuming you are talking about starting your work in the spring. If so,..

For sure do the soil test and add exactly what it calls for for that particular plot.

When you disc and break the ground and add your lime and fertilizer in late spring ,.. go ahead and plant buckwheat for a summer crop. Seeding rate is 50 lbs per acre. Buckwheat is a great food source,.. BUT,. most importantly,. its a excellent soil builder. This will help the soil produce a better fall plot.

As far as the planting. Are you wanting perennial or annual?? Also,. how big is each plot??

If they are large enough,. you might want one in annual and the other in perennial. Let me know and i will be glad to make a recommendation besides that over rated big name seed company brand.
 
From a different view..
I dont know if this is your land or someones other but you might want to also consider long term planting in addition to your above post. Here are some things I have started from seeds (except the last three items from a nursery) in the last couple of years..
20+/- Persimmon trees
Many Honeysuckle bush
Many Autumn Olive
Many Strawberry bush (hearts-a-burstin)
Many American Beautyberry
16 (2 varieties Triple Crown and Kiowa) of blackberries
4 Apple trees
2 Pear trees
I will then (hopefully later) have a small triangular shaped approximately quarter acre of rape, clover, etc...with a mowed trail of clover leading through the above items.
Now is the time to gather and plant many of these seeds.

used biologic hot spot and it came up great, I havent used the other this year but long as u have the right soil and rain i think you will be impressed
