permethrin use

I heard in another thread about permithrin. What do you do with it when you get a bottle of it at TSC??Thanks in advance..

Spray it on your clothes. DO NOT spray it on your skin.

It will kill ticks for several washings of your clothes.

I make sure I spray heavy on the waistbands, pants cuffs, button flys, etc to have a real barrier for the ticks to go across to get to my skin.

I've been using it since I bought my first can at LBL over 30 years ago, and nothing else even comes close for dealing with ticks.

Those little seed ticks hammer me in early summer when Im watering trees or in the woods,Do I just get a set of clothes an spray the heck out of them and wear that the rest of the summer or spray every time out?How much do I mix,I got a bottle at TSC??

I spray thoroughly the first time, and then add as I wear them. The stuff is much cheaper than getting treated for a tickborn disease.

BTW, thank you for the advice on the pilot lights and polyuretahane. We were super careful, and so far haven't had any issues.

i've never seen seed ticks until august when they hatch. only adult ticks until then.

If the liquid is 10%, you want to reduce that to 0.5%, so a mixing rate of 20:1 would be safest.

I like a higher mix, 1% seems to work best for me and stays on the clothing longer.

FYI...a 5% solution cream is used to treat scabies, applied once a week, so dont fret over getting a .5% solution on your skin by accident.

15 oz of Water to 1 oz of 10% petmethrin give you concentration of .625
Spray on clothes until wet... then allow to completely dry.
Will remain effective through several washings.

Br forewarned that many 10% permethrin concentrates (including those sold at Tractor Supply and co-ops) are produced for spraying on cattle, and contain petroleum distillates to help it stick to the animal. This won't affect how well the chemical works, but even when diluted 15 or 20 to 1, it will leave your clothes smelling like an oil refinery. Look for 10% permethrin that doesn't contain petroleum distillates.

My granddad used a 1% solution on his military clothing while he was active duty. With gloves he added 16 ounces of a 1% solution to a heavy duty plastic bag, to that bag he added his military bdu's rolled up and tied in log shapes, you would shake the bag a couple times and let it sit for min of 3 hours, then take it out and let it dry for 24 hrs min...this supposedly lasted the lifetime of the clothing he wore but he did it once a year in most cases.

It kept ticks and chiggers off better than any other spray they used.

My goal this year is to try to control my scent and movements in the field as much as possible. Both things going against me. I can't set still, and a sweat ALOT.

Read my post a few above this for the 1% solution mix and let your clothes "soak" in it. Then air dry, this is about as scent free as your gonna get with pemethrin, you can then wash it in a scent free soap and the pemethrin will still be active. Just make sure you use the petro free pemethrin.

I wish I could give you good advice Tenn.Guy, but I don't use permethrin on my hunting clothes, so I don't know what scent-reducing procedures might help.
