The other thread about leaving deer over night and coming back the next morning to get them got me wondering.

Would you feel comfortable leaving the buck of a lifetime laying overnight on public land if you made a questionable shot? I guess it doesn't have to be a big buck... what about a doe or a small buck???

I will be doing some public land hunting this year and am wondering what you guys think.

I don't like leaving any deer overnight although some times you are forced too. We left a doe one night. The temp. was 9 degree when we finally quit at around 10 p.m. We found her next day frozen stiff.

I would sleep in the truck and get up at first light or earlier... I have slept in public land before on turkey hunts... although it would have to be planned if the weather was cold, because I would need a lot of blankets....

I feel the same on public land as I would on private. You owe it to the deer to do your best in finding it and rushing through the woods is not the way to go.

Location doesnt matter if the situation calls for it!! Dont leave until dark, and be back at daylight the next morning, should eliminate most chance of being found and stolen. The predator problem will be there regardless of public or private ground.

When I lived in Michigan I had to leave one over night. I was back there before first light - two other vehicles where in the public parking area. I told the 3 guys hunting what I was doing and apologized if I stumbled upon them and messed up their hunt.

Two of the guys actually helped me track and recover my deer.

As stated already. probably would leave it and return at first light and warn anyone I seen that might be hunting that area.
