Went with one of my fishing buddies today in his boat. He hates fishing trees, brushpiles, etc, but he loves sniping open water suspended fish, so that's what we did. We quit at 1:15 with 26.

Yes, a lot of fun. Yes, I'm sick of cleaning fish. Finding them is really just covering water and scanning non stop.

Nice,i could use a day of that and a blackened prime ribat the enid depot.A buddy has been trying to get me to come down and go fishing with him.He has a camper down there thats usually at grenada but hes been moving it around some.Hecwas at butla the last 2 week you could put a boat in there.Then he moved it to enid at wallace creek and now hes back at grenada.He sends me pics every week trying to get me to come fish with him
Oh and if you havent tried the enid depot you need to go.You got to have reservations i believe though.They usually have a prime rib special and dont advertise they can blacken it,you have to ask for it blackened.It was the best prime rib i have ever ate.My buddy and his family ate there 2 weeks ago and said it was awsome as usual.

Having done some open water sniping, it's a matter of finding them on Livescope, casting past them, then bringing the jig slightly above them and overtaking them, getting them to commit.
I dont think we have many white crappie in middle tennessee. Would same technique work on black and black nose

As soon as I get good at controlling my boat we should plan a trip. Boat control is the key to success. The guy I fished with yesterday has a big, heavy 21 foot Ranger and he is a master at staying on the fish. October they will be on fire!

Some guys use side imaging. I typically use 2D sonar. Some of the guys I fish with have been fishing the lake for 50+ years, so I know places to look depending on the time of year. I just go to those areas and idle around until I find them. I usually can't tell the size until I start looking at them with the scope.
Yes. We occasionally find schools of black crappie, but they tend to run smaller and you don't catch a lot over 12".
It would, but I think blacks are more structure oriented. We do find schools in open water occasionally though.
Watch some of Eric Cagel's videos catching open water black crappie. He finds big schools and absolutely slays em.

I think Cagle could catch a crappie in a mud puddle. He can flat load the boat.
Very nice! I'm having to live vicariously through you guys and the fishing trips. I've only got to go a few times since Arkansas in May. I've worked over 300 hours of over time in just 3 months. That crap seriously cuts into fishing time.
Wow! I was having withdrawals since I hadn't fished in a couple weeks due to overtime!

I was given a number to a friend of a friend Robbie that sent me pictures of results fishing/sniping open water. Crappie catching machine.
One of the guys in my fishing group is named Robbie. Probably the same guy. If so, he's the one that got me started crappie fishing seriously 16 years ago.

He was a super nice guy and offered me to come follow them and learn how they do it. I know I'll be speaking to him again soon. I knew when he told me how they fished, I'd never be able to keep up till I re rigged my pole. That guy and a buddy of his went to Arkabutla and caught 2 limits of crappie. That's when I knew he was the real deal.
He's good and he can catch them in his boat, but his partner is phenomenal. His regular partner is who I fished with yesterday. Rarely does his partner launch the boat and not catch a limit, and if he takes someone it's a double limit. We could've caught a double limit yesterday but it took us a while to find the fish and at 1:15 we decided it was hot and 26 was plenty.
What did you try? Open water sniping?
