Congratulations to the young hunter. That's a heck of a buck.

Isn't it uncanny how relatively often such top-end large antlered bucks are taken by novice hunters rather than "accomplished" avid hunters? Could it be more that novices hunt the areas "accomplished" hunters are too smart to hunt, more a case of less antler high-grading in the locations novices tend to hunt, or what?

It is noteworthy.

Anyone know the age of that buck?

I couldnt agree more with your post !! Funny...my biggest (156" 10pt) came from a spot I never would have hunted if I hadnt seen another deer while coming out headed home ! Didnt know the deer I killed was even in the area until day 3 of hunting it waiting on my target buck. Surprise surprise....Id take it everyday like that tho :-)
I will see if I cant get an age on him.

Amazing! Cant wait to hear the story. This buck was taken probalby less than 10 miles from my backyard.

You are making the poor assumption that age equals hunting know how. I know well educated grown men that cannot hunt and probably never will be a good hunter. His age may not make him a novice.

"May take a long time to top that."

Never understood this reply to big deer posts. Why does he have to top this one? Is he done hunting because he may not? Do you hunt just to kill a big deer? If so you are missing a lot about hunting.

"Poor kid, he will never be the same again..."
What? Does that mean he will never enjoy hunting again because he killed a big deer? I caught my biggest bass when I was 10. I did not feel any different and did not change me.

Feeling a little froggy today I guess but these comments have been brewing for me, feel better now. Carry on.

Actually, my only assumption was as stated, with no mention of age. There are many novice, unaccomplished hunters of all ages, including perhaps the "average" purchaser of a hunting license who only hunts a couple weekends each year, with an average age of "older"?

But my assumption on his being a novice was based in part on the weapon used and his apparent age. Reasonable assumption? We all start out as "novices", and I by no means mean to demean any novices ---- congratulations to all of them for taking their steps afield.

Just wanting to draw attention to the fact that so relatively many of the top-end bucks seem to be taken by less experienced hunters, and to ask "how" & "why" is this the case?
