old stone wall

My wife's family farm is in Smith co. The farm is about 250 acres, and the whole farm is surronded by a dry stacked rock wall ( as are alot of farms around this area). Does anybody know the history of these walls? I assume it was built by slaves because it would have took a farmer years to do it. Are these walls good places to look for relics?
