I have several rifles that have served me well over the years. As a rifleman, I keep up with the modern makes and models but always return to my faithful ones when it's time to hunt. There's someting about the rifles from the golden age (1880-1964) that just hold me spellbound.

How many of you hunt with and prefer models from this era?

I've hunted for about 20 years with a sporter Mauser Model 1916 Spanish that was made around 1945.

These rifle can be had for less than many new ones.

A good pre-64 Winchester 94 can be had for $500. Savage 99's can be found for $600-700 sometimes even less. I bought a good one made in 1928 for $425. Remington model 14's can still be purchased reasonably as well.

Admittedly, many are very expensive. I paid $1100 for a nice 1886 Winchester in 45-70, and about the same for my 1895 Winchesters in 30-40 Krag and 405 WCF.

My favorite is a model 71 Winchester in 348 WCF. However, I bought it over 25 years ago and have been offered six times what I paid for it.

i occasionally hunt with my winchester pre-64.its cool to know how old it is and the history.really just a 30/30 to me though.its in dang good shape if any of you history buffs wants to make a offer

My brother in law has a older '94 win. .30-30 that was made in the '40's. He has not hunted with it in a long time though. It has killed some deer though.

Not sure what year dad bought it in but prob early 70s but it's my favorite to hunt with and all I have to do is shoulder it and it's on target. Just point and shoot. It's a Remington 760 pump in 30.06 with a redfield wide view scope.

I cut my shooting teeth with 22 centerfires so have always focused on "fast and flat" when it comes to rifles. But here recently I've had a real urge to hunt with some more traditional rifles. (Ignoring the fact that some real hotrods like the 220 Swift date back to 1930's....) I recently bought an old Marlin 336 in 35 Remington that I'm excited to deer hunt with this year. I'll still be nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs when crossing the huge fields while carrying that rifle but I think it's going to be a hoot in the woods.

If anybody is looking, I know where a 94 made in 1958 is that can be had for $500. Its in dang good shape for a gun that old too! I dont need it. Ive got a 94 in 38/55 in the safe that was made in 1895 if I get the urge to hunt with an oldie! Ive serioulsy thought about taking it to Ontario and killing a bear with it. THAT would be cool!

BTW anybody thats never handled one of the old (good) winchester lever guns should at least pick one up and feel of it. The actions on those are like night and day compared to the newer stuff. Much tighter and solid feeling, with very positive lock ups. Even the hammers feel stronger.

I have several model 94's as they are my favorite deer rifle overall. I have them in 25-35, 30 WCF, 32 special, 38-55 wcf, and 45 Colt. They are in every configuration from a 26 inch octagon barreled sporting rifle to 16 inch trappers. I'm looking for a 32-40, 375 Win, 356, win, and 307 win.
