$375 is as much as I'm willing to spend on a new squirrel gun.
Marlin 981T (new bolt gun with a tube mag) .22LR $229 +/-
Marlin 917TS (blued/walnut thumbhole) .17HMR $359
Ruger M77 .22LR $600 +/-
Or I forgot the model but Savage bolt action .17HMR w/ heavy barrel. $219+

If the ruger wasn't so expensive then my choice would be made.
I like savage rimfire stocks but not the actions. I like marlin actions but their rimfire stocks feel like a 2x4 to me. I even looked at a few CZ's but they are a tad outside my price range. And really the only things keeping me from getting a .17HMR is the ammo price and what they do to a squirrel. I don't want to be draggin a bag of guts around all day.

Don't get the 17HMR if you want to eat them unless you take head shots. I have the Savage model 93 with heavy barrel and have shot a few that had torn through the vents on my house. The Hornady V-max 17 grain bullets leave one heck of a hole. It's very accurate.

I used to have a remington 597 iirc in .17HM2 but almost nobody carries that caliber anymore. I also used to have a blued/synthetic M77 ruger in .17HMR that was a tack driver but ended up selling it. I wish I hadnt now.

I love my M77/22 topped with a Leupold 2-7X28. I don't know if you can find one now, but about 8 years ago I got mine used in excellent condition for $325 (without the scope).

There is a Ruger M77/22 on Gun Owners Club for 350.00 right now. I don't think it has a scope. I believe it is in Columbia. I believe they started out at 400 or 450.00 They may negotiate more.
