Shawnee State Forest is 60,000 acres.
Brush Creek State Forest is 13,000 acres.
Woodbury Wildlife Area is 20,000 acres.
Tranquility Wildlife Area is 4,000 acres.
Dillion Wildlife Area dont know the acreage.
Conesville Coal Land is 12,000 acres and you need a free permit from local bait shops.

All of these areas hold some great bucks. A non-resident license is only $149 (I Think) over the counter too! I hope this helps you out some. Type in "Ohio Public Land Hunting" and a bunch of great info will pop up. I would not be suprised if the next world record was to come out of Ohio!
 
Also not mentioned by hornmaster is Cooper Hollow WMA 4,201 acres/Paint Creek WMA 6188 acres /Salt Fork WMA 8279 acres and plus Wayne National Forest 230,000 acres. The good thing about Ohio is everywhere you go is booner teritory!
 
the young man from corryton ,tenn killed a 200 1/8 in adams county ,it is a giant ,he killed it just a few miles from shawnee forest and brush creek it is in the north american whitetail mag. sept.issue go on line and look up nick beeler buck and see it there too

Pretty sure that was a paid hunt. Adams county has become famous and because of it deer farms have become popular. Wouldn't surprise me if that deer didn't cost 5 grand or better.

My brother and I decided to pick a public ground that we could get back in and hunt it for four years. We figured it would take that long to figure the place out and take some nice bucks. The first year was great, deer every where. Rubs and scrapes almost every where, brother took a nice 8 that year. The next years the place held less and less deer till the last year my brother never saw 1 deer and for him to not see something is a big deal, he's a deer killing machine, hunted all over.

Turns out a group of menonites took up camp in there (illegal) and stunk the entire area up before we got there. We saw them off and on with the last year watching them get rounded up by the dnr. That's hunting public ground. It was Woodbury.

I don't consider it a lose, I took some deer out of there and learned the area. When and if it comes back I have my own maps of the place and believe the deer will be where they were.

It's never a waste if you learn something.
 
Wayne National isn't what you expect. Most of those acres listed are privately owned and the people who own them are way over done with hunters going through their land. If your thinking it's like a George Washington National forest in Va. and W.Va. you'll be sadly mistaken. My brother and I found this out when looking at it after Woodbury.

The nick beeler buck was killed on public land in western part of adams county. All it cost him was his gas and license.The southern part has some big ridges and hollows and is hard to hunt but carry alot of deer and some big bucks.

Nice, they do have some big ones down there. Makes the price of ground round there on the steep side.

I get around and this was posted by a guy on another site, he came and has never been back. For some reason he started a thread about this guy and deer and that was it. Makes me still say there is more to this story. Looked on line for the story in N.A.Whitetail, got a link. N.A.W site said couldn't find anything.

I think the main beams were 27 and 25 it's got 28 points several inch points and a few that's not a inch,they are all around the base's the base's are around 9" main beam around 5". It is bigger than it looks!
All i know is i have a 187" that is not close to this deer.
Nick has hunted with me for a long time and it couldn't have happend to
a better young man, what ever it scores in 60 day's!

Sept. issue has him in it ,walmart carries the magazine and there are a couple more big bucks from ohio in it this month too.Anyways there is some good public land to hunt in ohio,you just have to up and put some time in and find it
 
If a man drove to Ohio and hunt one of the properties listed above, what caliber deer could he expect to be hunting? Would 120+ be reasonable?
 
in my opinion your capable of seeing anything from 100-140+ to who knows... you just never kno hunting up there... thats why its so tempting lol...

All though it's still hunting. Yes I can say where I hunt 120" I see often. Although I'm going for bigger. But anywhere from 115 to 145. I did see my biggest buck ever lastyear he was close to 170" I'm pumped for this year
 
Hey Drew, I know we hunt very close to the same area, when have you seen the most rutting activity?

Im thinking of making a trip up during bow season.

Man it all depends on weather. But the second week of November. But I shot my big buck last year on November 29. That was the 3rd buck I seen chasing does hard. So. Anytime during or after the second week. I got pics of the 170" buck on camera day time nov 15 at 11am
 
Ok thanks, I was really thinking of going up around Halloween. Guess I'll wait and see what the weathers like when that time rolls around.

Any crops on your lease?
 
No crops on ours. It's mostly CRP and thickets. I was up last year( not saying this year will be different) the weekend before Halloween. And they just started rubbing the Sunday I left. Which would have been like the 21 or something like that
 
the week of halloween and til the end of nov.you have a good chance of seeing a wall hanger up there.The week b4 and the week after halloween we have rattled and grunted in some nice bucks in the past
