This may have already been posted here, but I searched and couldn't find it.

Remember this guy in North Carolina?

Turns out it was a hoax... just as many people suspected.

... the rack had come from a deer hunted in Pennsylvania and was screwed onto the skull plate of a recently taken 3-pointer.

"Wardens had him confess. Antlers were from Pennsylvania," Thompson said. "(They) went to his house; they were getting overwhelmed with calls and had to check it out."

I saw that on Facebook. What a shame. I still don't see how the taxidermist didn't catch it.
I know right? The guy is a expert?? And he does not catch a set of antlers screwed into a skull??

Something mighty fishery sounding there,

Sorry but the guy posing with a deer looks like a punk. Guess in this case you could judge a book by its cover [emoji3]

I would hope that the "official scorer" is not that any longer.
If they ever let him score another..how can anyone ever believe him?
His credibility is shot.

Thanks for posting the picture it made me laugh.
I know . Right?

I read one of the game wardens comments on another article saying that the screws were cleverly hidden and not immediately visablle and how he could see how the expert may have overlooked them.

I'm sorry. But if you are a expert and expected to certify and be a expert at judging and measuring state records... You should be smart enough to spot a fake.

Right that's what I was gonna point out. They still never gave any hints as just how they were cleverly hidden. Don't they face cape it and when it's off the skull and they have skull and horns together they saw the horns off. How then when sawed could it no been easy to see?

I'm calling BS on how it was cleverly hidden, I think the game warden in the article is just trying to help the scorer save face by helping him to get off the hook for his stupidity for getting duped. I'm sorry but any expert that did not investigate this and saw deer in the headlights .. That went to the trouble to carefully score a state record deer should have discovered this, it's just negligence on his part and I would never let him score another deer again if it were left up to me.

With a little effort I could swap out antlers and you would have to look really hard to find out how I did it.

Thats besides the point, those antlers look like high fence antlers. When i think of pen raised deer those are the antlers I think about.

The point being .. A expert scoring a potential state record deer should have been looking really hard.

While I agree with your statement, it should also be pointed out that this "expert" was not officially scoring this buck. In some respects, it was more of a cursory glance. The antlers have to be "dried" for at least 60 days before an official score is made.

Since the scorer was not officially scoring the deer, it may have been he simply gave the hunter any initial benefits of his doubts, knowing the buck/antlers would be more meticulously scrutinize when officially scored later.

Apparently, doing such is easier than it sounds, because I've heard of bucks being officially scored, without the fact they had fake or swapped antlers being caught, at least not at the time of scoring.

I suspect that "expert" scorer may have been just being "nice" rather than "accusatory" in the absence of any initial evidence that anything was wrong when he took his first look at those antlers. :)

Its only easier than it sounds if you know what your doing. I enter taxidermy competitions and one of the judging factors is craftsmanship, aka no seam lines, etc.

On a fresh (green) deer its super easy to hide the seam because the skin hasnt dried and you can stretch it more than normal without distorting. Replacing the skull cap could be done with bondo or you could simply attach different antlers to the pedicles and eliminate any seams.

The more I think about it the more un-natural that rack looks on the deer. The hair/skin around the original pedicle would doubtfully fit well around those new antlers. It should have been noticeable.

Well am I the only one that thinks the rack looks like it has laid out in the sun FOR A WHILE? The antlers are bleached out something terrible. That's what jumps out at me first off.

I get that.. I really do.. But this guy is some sort of a official, scorer with the state and is in a position to know better, he has no business scoring deer if he can be duped like this.
