I am guilty of going into a store and not paying attention to EVEYTHING on the shelves, but at Wal-Mart the other day I had to walk by the ammo case just to see what was or wasn't there (even though I wasn't needing ammo). I walked thru the hunting isle and it hit me as I stood there amazed at all of the s**t they have on the shelves to insure you kill that next monster buck.. Chicory flavor for your corn? Crushed acorns with vanilla flavor??? So when did Rachel Ray start producing recipes for hunters! Only in America can we turn something into a money making and money spending empire!!!

Its ALL about the money! New Trinkets and gadgets every year for people to buy just because they are still looking for the magic tool that makes them successful!

That's the truth. When I first started hunting as a teenager I got sucked in to all the marketing. Now every year it becomes more and more of a organic thing, rather then focusing all this energy into the newest and latest craze. I just hunt, period.

I quit buying gimmicks years ago.My uncle would always shake his head when I would come in with the newest hunting gadget.

Donkey butter, no plow food plots, acorn cruncher, etc...

Why don't people just learn some woodsmanship?

The no plow food plots are nice for the guys that don't have equipment

because woodsmanship isn't for everybody, there are some that just want to go out and try or even just put the stickers on their truck without even trying. And some that just like a lazy afternoon sitting over a pile of Deer Nutz. Can't blame the companies for making them, they know how to lure in the suckers and capitalize on it.

Ya it is full of crap that is unnecessary for hunting a deer. Heck I'm still hunting in rustler jeans and flannel shirts. If deer are color blind who needs camo!!! LOL

Hunters have created the market for that crap. Too many hours spent watching info commercials I mean hunting shows. Got to sit back sometimes and laugh. But the other sad truth to it is, also caused by hunters, that new hunters don't know any better. We as a whole are responsible for this. Not passing on the knowledge that was past on to us. Putting too much emphasis on only shooting a big racked buck and making fun of someone that shot a spike. Sure you might teach it to your child or a close friend but when was the last time you talked to complete stranger and spent an hour or so giving advise. Used to pull up to a big game check station and just about everyone had time to spend and congratulate someone on the deer they took regardless of size. Until we as a group change and get back more into the social (learning/teaching ) aspects of hunting more of this crap is going to be bought and sold.

Very true. I remember a local gas station as a kid was the place to be around 9 or 10 in the morning because everyone was there to check in their deer, eat a tenderloin biscuit, and share stories about the morning hunt. Now you kill a deer, pull out your smart phone to check it in, then go home. Not too much of the story sharing or advice sharing like you said. As a kid I remember more about listening to the old timers talk at that gas station and think one day I wanted to be as good at hunting as they were. I could never live up to those high expectations until...."deer droppings in a bag" came out! Now I am sure to kill a monster buck every time I go! LOL

So true, and I'll resist the urge to add anything. Good post.

the day i feel the need to put out corn or any of that crap they sell in order to kill a deer is the day i hang up my bow/gun because that is not hunting.

plus a majority of that crap is illegal to use when hunting anyway. not worth the cost of getting caught. of course they don't care they are out to make money

One of the sad parts is Tennessee does not put the resources into enforcement of the laws outdoors. How much territory can two wardens assigned to a county do? They certainly can't catch half of what goes on. Not knocking the wardens at all. They just can't cover all the ground to enforce.

Yeah, you'd think with the price of our licenses being so much higher compared to most other states there'd be more enforcement, but I guess the money goes more toward all the wma's? I don't know...I'm just saying that I'm sick and tired of finding corn buckets on the public land I hunt. I haven't found a "fresh" one yet, but I don't remember coming across them until the last few years.

Go watch how many are coming in to buy corn. Last year I watched a guy buy a bow Friday night around 9 and he told the cashier he'd be in the woods in the morning. The only thing I buy besides ammo is usually a bottle of scent spray. Does it help, idk but I sweat a lot and does seem minimize some of the odor. But that's my nose!

I don't have food plot equipment, but I also don't feel the need to have a food plot in order to kill a deer.

Yep. Its like the decoy tree they make now so you can get the big bucks to make a licking branch in front of your stand
