Hey guys,

I came across a YouTube channels that every serious deer hunter should check out. The guy on this YouTube channel took an entire season off from deer hunting to fly a thermal drone and and research mature bucks. What he learned is unprecedented to anything I've ever heard regarding mature buck behavior.

Just as a disclaimer, I don't know the owner of this channel and I have no affiliation with him whatsoever.

He has very very interesting stuff on his channel. I have enjoyed watching the progress and seeing his findings!

Agree. Not "true" science (no controls or standardized methodology), but that doesn't matter. He's learning a bunch of cool stuff and I eagerly await each of his episodes.

Many of us here have been watching this guy's channel from its inception.
Yeah, I've been watching him since he put out his second video. I should have figured you guys would have known about it. Very interesting information, though some of it is a little tricky to follow. Need to re-watch some of them.

I'm just thrilled his data is matching a lot of what I believed to be true from running rub surveys, as in how bucks use terrain. His data is also matching what my data said for the differences between buck morning movement versus evening. Absolutely fascinating stuff.

Same for me on some stuff and then some other things it opened my eyes to whats really going on vs what I thought was happening! Hard to argue with live video on live deer, repeatedly!

I was also fascinated to learn that "lockdown" is real. At times, I wondered if it wasn't just hunter perception.
Agreed BSK, so many rules of thumb or myths surrounding deer hunting that you hear all your life but you may or may not agree with based on your own results but could never verify on a large scale.

Exactly. Although it's short snippets of data, I like that it's a real view of activity. GPS collar studies are cool in a macro sense but leaves the details vague & unknown. These short snippets of video help fill in those otherwise unseen gaps.

GPS collar studies have their place. But being able to follow a buck all day long, mapping every move he makes and visually seeing what he's doing, that is absolutely ground-breaking.

Curious if there was any of his findings that surprised you?

I'm not sure about surprised me, but I was fascinated by his research showing how bucks avoided specific terrain and how hunters could look for situations where bucks avoiding certain terrain features forced a "funneling effect." Really interesting. I'm going to have to look for those on my place. But first, I'll need to pay for the LIDR stuff for my area! Only the LIDR has the definition to show these features.

For LIDAR, I use Spartan Forge. It has the most detail of all the LIDAR I've seen. Is there another source you'd use instead?

Yeah, I have to admit, that after watching him use LIDR, among other tools on his videos, I broke down and purchased an onX Elite membership for a year. It is a pretty cool program/app with a lot of useful tools. Previously, I used Hunt Stand & liked it a lot, but onX does offer more useful features.

And no, I'm not associated with or receive kickbacks from onX, but that would be sweet!

Sorry CrawlNinja. I posted my above before reading your post. What do you think of the LIDR on OnX? Have you found anything interesting?

I don't have a lot of basis for comparison, put it seems to be pretty stinking accurate. It shows logging roads, small shelves on the sides of hills, indentions in hillsides (presumably from trees that have fallen over & uprooted), steep creek embankments, & pretty much everything else. If there is LIDR out there that is more accurate, I wouldn't think it would be by much

I have found the lidar on onx to be very accurate when looking at properties that I know very well. In fact, the lidar shows the spot I killed the old mountain 9 this year perfectly. 400ish yards of rocks/bluffs to the right and 450ish yards of rocks/bluffs to the left with a 80 yard gap in the middle. I knew it was that way from just walking it all but the lidar shows it so well. Lidar is just a part of my onx elite subscription that I've always had, no extra cost.

The worst thing I have heard him say so far, and there haven't been many, was he doesnt worry too much about wind, but instead watches thermals...
WHAT...
So if I have a 10-15 DOMINANT north wind I need to ignore it and watch thermals???
WRONG.
Also he is again, like so many other site or areas of the country hunters, making generalizations as if they apply to areas I hunt.
WRONG.
Ther is literally NOT A BOX. to group deer behavior at certain times of the year for all types of deer.
Pressured, relaxed, Mid West, male, female, Southeast...etc. ALL DIFFERENT animals.

And rutting deer...forget it. NO BOX.

And how many hours does he fly those thermal drones at a time?

My experience with drones is that they have to come back OFTEN qand get batteries.

He does have interesting stuff but I wouldn't plan any hunts around most of it for my Southeastern public land pressured deer!

That looks great

My OnX LiDAR looks no different than no LiDAR other than some shading.

Our lease is covered with ditches and old logging roads that don't show up. There are ditches snd roads all over that section that don't show up.

Yeah, from my understanding, regardless of what service you're getting your LIDR from, I think it really depends on what LIDR has been done/is available for the area your interested in.
