This morning while hunting on public land this monster showed up. Urban hunting at its best. Let's begin.
So, at roughly 9:40 I start hearing a bunch of noise behind me. The next thing I know a spike and what I thought was an eight pointer came running behind my stand chasing a doe. I could not get any of them to stop so there was no chance of a shot (hunting with a crossbow today). All 3 deer gone just as quick as they came. I'm grunting and hitting the "can" in hopes that a miracle happens and they come back. Well, a moment later that is exactly what the doe and spike did. That spike was still running that doe but this time they past in front my stand. Again, I could not get those 2 to stop or even slow down. They are gone again. Then I thought to myself, there is no way that other buck just give up on the chase of that doe. I started hitting the estrous bleat again. There he comes trotting back toward me coming from the thicket passing through a good shooting lane. For the 3rd time I failed at getting a deer to stop. I think the buck was circling around looking for the doe that he thought he was hearing (my estrous bleat). He was again out of range and out of sight. At this point, I believe I was using the "can" repeatedly as I can recall. I was tore up and nervous. Well, it worked. Here comes the buck again on the same course as a moment ago. I felt like I knew exactly where he would emerge from the thick stuff. Right at a 20 yard shot. And that is exactly where he came out. As soon as he stepped into my shooting lane, I made the verbal bleat this time with crosshairs on the vitals. The buck paused quartering in this time. I know that is not the best angle but at 20 yards I was confident of this shoot. A big mistake on his part. I pulled the trigger sending a 22" bolt equipped with a NAP double cross broad head to his vitals. I saw my green and white fetching still protruding from the buck as he ran about 20 yards away. At that point, he stopped he fell over on the ground. I thought that was it. But, he quickly got up and casually walked away in the thick stuff out of my sight. I let an hour pass before tracking him. I only had a couple of drops of blood. I could not believe it. I was already thinking of swapping broad heads for future hunts. Then I see him laying only 15 yards away from where he fell the 1st time. Self-celebration! As I walk up I start to realize I have stuck a monster. I'm counting as I walk up.....it's an 11 pointer with split brow tines. I pick the head up to admire and I notice there was a drop tine that I did not see while walking up. Oh my! This was a harvest of a lifetime, it is a 12 pointer! Celebration commence.
For the year this is my 1st tag to punch. I was beginning to think I may not get one this year. I will add that this is the 1st deer ever harvested with archery equipment for me. God is so good!
