Welcome from Middle TN. You can search for public land opportunities on-line. Cherokee National Forest has thousands of acres and there are others others within a resonable drive of your area. And you probally already have but if not, look into the hunters safety course which is required. Hopefully you can get to know a few others in the area that hunt who can help get you started on a trip or two. Good luck on your journey!

Welcome. My advise would be to start with squirrels. A license, gun and knife are the only things you need. You'll learn everything you need to know about hunting, with lots of practice. They'll teach you patience, how to shoot, how to field dress, and how to cook wild game.

Learning to successfully take squirrels (stalk hunting 1 on 1) is perhaps the single best way to learn basic hunting, harvesting, and game preparation skills.

You can learn quicker if u can find an accomplished squirrel hunter to take u a few times.

Yeah a buddy is what you need. Ask folks that hunt if you can hunt with them some time. If they have it setup already then great go ask the next person that hunts. If you are using firearms always remember safety comes first. You can't call a bullet back. Good hunters closely watch how others conduct themselves. Archery is how i would learn how to deer hunt. That's how i did it and it's still my favorite. Hogs and coyotes, trapping is where it's at. Many people will let you trap and i know i kill more like that. Good luck.

. . . . . squirrels are delicious so go kill & eat some!
They actually are much like a chicken thigh in taste & texture.
They can be tougher meat that a chicken thigh, if you don't prepare them with that in mind.

Once you figure out how to "clean" a mess of squirrels,
all other game is easier :)

Agree, as you will learn faster & better deer hunting skills archery deer hunting than you will via gun deer hunting.

I actually don't mind the chewy texture. If I'm ever on death row I want my last meal to be fried squirrel, biscuits, and gravy made from the leftover in the skillet. Favorite all time meal 😋

I'd love to learn to cook that. Every time I've tried to fry squirrel or rabbit it turns to rubber

There's a sweet spot for temp. Too low & it's not done. Too high & it's rubber. But heck sometimes it's just rubber no matter what. I've had jerky that's softer than some of the squirrels & rabbits I've eaten.

Get a couple trail cameras, scout where you can hunt, check your cameras regularly like every few weeks or cell cameras daily, then set up high if you can. It's always best to hunt with a buddy. I'm lucky to have a great hunting buddy, my brother. Good luck.

I sure hope nothing happened to the RealDeal423. He joined, posted a question, and then disappeared.

Folks steering him to small game might have discouraged him, he stated what he was after and small game wasn't listed.
