Nephew shot a dandy today at 11:45! We had an exciting hunt to say the least, had 5 bucks chasing a yearling doe HARD. All 5 of them grunting their head off and 3 of the 5 were injured and limping. We were hunting on the ground in a blown down tree top and had one 110" 8pt run by no more than 6 feet from us. He was hurt bad and carried his left front leg the entire time, I could see his shoulder blade and his backbone he was so run down. I was watching him and never seen the buck my nephew was watching until he ran 10 yards in front of us and stopped right behind a tree !! He started to the right and I hollered at him and stopped him 20 yards and the 243 barked. He shot him low on his neck in front of his shoulder and the bullet must have caught the shoulder blade as it never came out.....luckily he only ran 100 yards and crashed cause we never found a drop of blood until we were 30 yards from the deer. I know some of you are wondering why we were looking for blood if we seen him fall and could see him from were we was standing but to me that is a learning lesson for a youngster as they don't always fall were you can see them, tracking is part of the game. This buck was limping as well and I am still puzzled as to why the bullet didn't exit at that close of a shot.
I am not sure of the age as he is at Daniel's Rack Shack Taxidermy but I asked him to save me the jaw bone. We had another yearling doe and a button walk up on us while we were taking pictures and gathering ourselves, I took some video of them and may post those later.
