I have never owned a semi auto pistol , I have leaned to the revolvers side, with that said I am in the market for a good semi auto , I have no one type or cal in mind so I am pretty much open to all makes , I would like it to be either a 9 ,40 or 45 cal , it will mostly be for plinking and just to say I have one , but would like to be able to carry it if need be , I don't want no jam o matic so I want to stay will a good name brand , I have a budget of 600 or so , I don't much like the looks of a glock but would still be happy with one if its the right fit , the one that's kinda caught my eye is a beretta 92fs , my local shop has a used one for 389 or new for 600 plus tax , just kinda wanted to hear y'all's suggestions before i buy, I one thing I would love to have on it is a laser site or the ability to add one later . Of course ammo selection and price is a big factory as well , thanks for your advice .

With a budget of $600, pretty much everything (except custom shop pieces or some of the pricier 45's) is available to you. If you can find a shop that has one and are interested in a compact, check out a Walther PPS. It comes in either 9mm or 40S&W and you can mount a laser on the rail under the barrel.

Opinions are like rear-ends, everybody has one. I tend to be a .45 cal fan. But if you say it's just for plinking and some carry, I would go with a 9mm of some sort. They are cheaper to shoot. You really should shop around and handle a few. See what fits your hand the best. Most of the leading brands will give you good service.

i gave my berretta 92 away never did like it
i've shot several never had any consistancy with any of them

The best advice I can give anyone is to shoot some first. Try to find an indoor range that does rentals. Find the action your looking for or what fits your hand not mine. I would just stay with the major brands sig, glock, Springfield, kahr, ruger, ect.... 1911s are nice but if your not willing to carry cocked and locked then I wouldn't recommend one. I personally carry a sig p238. Its basically a miniature 1911 and in .380. Easy to carry and conceal and dependable. Extremely accurate for its size. Pic out dif aspects that your looking for. Do you want an external safety. Single action double action. Short or long trigger. I'm going through all of this with my wife. So far is between a sig like mine vs Smith body guard. Hope this helps. If I had to recommend I would say tarus slim, Springfield xd, or glock.

XD no doubt. It won pistol of the year for how many years? Also it wont break the bank and is reliable. 9mm for plinking and economical ammo. TNrifleman I agree about the kimber (I have a Ultra CDP as well) but that is a bit over the 600 mark.

If you can get a used Berreta 92 for $389, I would be all over that. Berreta's are great shooters but they are finicky about cheap ammo. A freind of mine has a 92 and I have an M9. You have to shoot quality ammo out of them, no russian surplus.

M&P40

American made 16 rounds of reliable fire power.

I carry a M&P45 and absolutely love it. No problems what so ever other than the price of ammo. 40 cal is much cheaper.
