We finally got the approval from the landowner and farmer to do a 1/2 acre food plot on our new lease. It has been bush hogged. We will be spraying round up this weekend, and will have it tilled the following week. What should we plant? I have been looking at oats/wheat, but I have read where oats need over an inch of dirt. We will be broadcasting the seed by hand so will need something that will grow with about 1/4 inch of dirt. The field where we will be planted is a hay field. Nothing has been planted in several years. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Do you want an annual or perennial? Want to provide protein for the herd of to draw them in an area to shoot?

I would wait a little longer between spraying and tilling.. As to what the plant, the ^^^ questions are good.

I'm leaning towards an annual. Looking to draw them in right now. This is the first year to hunt this lease but I know there are good deer in the area and I know for a fact the surrounding farms do not do food plots. How long between spraying and tilling? 2 weeks?
