Yesterday afternoon I took my son fishing for stripers after work. We got on the water about 6pm and I had two lookers pretty quick. We fish redfin lures that only swim 1 ft. deep and a lot of times you see them follow and take the lure. But like I said, mine were just lookers and not takers. My son had no action at all and was getting discouraged as he has been with me a few times this summer and hasn't hooked up yet. Right as it was getting dark, we passed through an area with only about a foot and a half of water and I told him to make a cast into it because I new it held fish and it was just dark enough that they wouldn't spook as easily. He makes about two casts and the water explodes! He set the hook and the fish immediately runs pulling out line in the shallow water. With just a little coaching from me, he manages to make ground and get the fish to the boat where I can net it. He is just 13 and this is his first striper. Needless to say, he and I both were quite excited! The fish weighed 15 lbs. We got our pictures and revived it and it took off like a bullet into the night. Now he can't wait to go again.
