You could read one side great but the other where the indian head was you could barely read the date. Im still soaking it in water though. Copper holds up great, the new zinc pennies do not hold up very well though.

I found a 1900 indian head and a 1980 something penny in the same area. The indian head was rough, but it was intact, and the new penny was already corroded through in a couple of places.

Olive oil will work a bit better than water for getting the green stuff off copper coins.

Let it soak in there for a day or so and then take a tooth pick and prick what green will come off, then back into the olive oil bath for a while and repeat. I've dug old coins that were undiscernable as to what they were (other than shape and diameter) that I got to where I could tell what they were from doing the above.
