Yesterday I set up in an area between two thickets with a good deer trail intersection in the middle. About 7:40 I heard a soft grunt, and thought I saw a flash of antler about 45 yards away. I grabbed my grunt call and my bleat can, and used both. The deer grunted again, but wouldn't budge.
I suddenly realized that my eyes were playing tricks on me, and that the deer that I thought was 45 yards away was actually right in front of me. A sudden flick of an ear brought everything into focus - it wasn't an antler I had seen, but the white of a big doe's ear, and she was not even 30 yards away in a thick wad of brush.
I was standing behind a small tree for concealment, with my pistol on my shooting stick. After several minutes, she decided to move. Instead of going to my right, where I had a shooting lane of 10-20 feet, she started picking through the brush to my left, where I had one tiny opening for a shot. I set my aim for that spot, and fired when she passed the tree into the open.
The 240-grain Hornady hollow point spun her around and dropped her. I rushed the shot a bit in my excitement, and hit her in front of the shoulder (base of neck). She's the largest doe I've ever killed. I believe it's the same one that busted my dad on several hunts last year. Below is a pic of the deer, and another of a close-up of the pistol. It's a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter (7.5" barrel) in 44 mag with an Ultradot 30mm red dot on top.
