Had a heck of a season here in MS. Below are several reasons I moved here years ago. Many "first" duck kills this year by friends and family. Got to hunt with friends that I don't see often. Started with the early teal season in September. Mosquitos in the MS delta are no joke but wife toughed it out killing her first duck. Shooting a Beretta A300 20ga that I've grown fond of myself. In general, duck numbers were low all season but we managed several good hunts. This was 2yo Dixie's 2nd season. She did well for a spoiled couch dog.

Deer cooperated as well. One of my 8 yo daughters got her first deer during the juvy. Model 7 youth .243 shooting the Norma whitetail ammo. Her "Diddy" was also present. Great memorable hunt for all of us. The season could have ended there and I would have been content.

I started my season with a few early bowkills and a couple does during our "primitive" season with the 45-70. Did shoot my personal best doe (159#).

When the freezer was full I switched gears to focus on the bucks. Mid December I was able to get on one. I watched him the day before for several hours at 300yds tending a doe. I watched him go out of sight after I decided I did want to shoot him. Snapped a pic as he was going away and regretted it that night after a couple of bourbons and looking back at the pics with my cuz. I decided to go back after him the next morning. Around 0900 I centerpunched his lungs at 257 yds with the Tikka 30-06. 165gr Sierra GK performed as usual. He ran down a levee and expired in the ditch. He was a fat one at 235lbs. Took 3 of us to load him in the ranger.

Cousin came down to hunt. He managed a trophy doe with his 300 win mag. Some may be familiar with the MSU Deer Lab. I recommend listening to their podcasts and several youtube videos on deer/land management. They've been conducting a deer movement study using GPS collars. Two summers ago they tranquilized and collared a buck and a doe on our club property. They made an announcement before the season to please shoot any collared deer that the study had concluded and they wanted the collars back to pull more info from them. Since tagging them no one in our club had any sightings of them that I know of until this season. We believe the doe to be 4.5yo by their data.

Pigs have just started showing up again. This was the first year we have seen any in quite awhile. Really since the 2019-2020 floods. I think the Feds killed a good many by helicopter when they were huddled up on dry ground. I managed a couple with the Encore 7mm-08 when I was deer hunting. They don't like a 140gr Accubond through the shoulders.

I knew what kind of bucks were in the area so in between duck hunts I focused on them. We had a very mild and wet December and January, but that didn't stop the rut. The ducks were spread thin but the deer were behaving. Weather won't keep me out of the stand, especially during rut. Several mid-day hunts is where I witnessed the best action. I passed up several nice bucks looking for one that I couldn't get out of my brain. I never focus on a particular buck, but with one tag punched I was going to be picky. Seems it always happens when you least expect it. I had a buddy in town to duck hunt and one January afternoon we both sat in a box blind in a high deer traffic area. Really we were just have a great time catching up. But deer kept pouring out of the CRP... does and small bucks. About 30min before dark a 120"ish 9pt came out pestering some does. I was thinking with all the commotion that if a biggun was in the area he would not take too kindly of it. Sure enough about 10min later my buddy spots another deer coming through the CRP. Both with binos on him I think we realized it about the same time what buck this was. I knew he was big I just didn't know how big. I knew I was going to shoot him given the chance. He came right to the edge at 115yds looking out at the other deer then looked straight towards us. I figured now or never and squeezed one off. He ran across the plot and made it to the woods on the other side. I couldn't believe what just happened. After calming down we both agreed he looked like he was hit hard. 15min pass and we couldn't stand it any longer. He wasn't but just a few steps inside the woodline. 140gr Accubond thru the heart/lungs did him in. Buck of a lifetime most likely, and I had a good buddy to witness it. Doesn't get any better. Mainframe 8 with few extras. The mass is whats the most impressive. One time I can say pics don't do him justice. We aged him at 5.5yo by MSU data when they collared him and by tooth wear. I'm truly blessed.

Heck of a year Chad! I thought that first buck you killed was a giant until I kept scrolling and saw the collared buck. That sucker is huge. It would be neat to see all the info they retrieve from the collar.
