Most OVERRATED hunting gear?

Many of us learn from others free of charge. I'll kick this off with my most overrated gear that today I wish was NOT in my arsenal of gear.

I'm curious as to why you find these "overrated", and have you tried the Meindl Alaskan Hunters (seem to be similar)?

that sounds like the magnets would mess with your phone or SD cards if you happen to be checking cameras... wouldn't it?


I might agree with Poser on turkey decoys. At least for me personally I don't see the need for them, but then I do hunt areas loaded with birds and usually shoot them in the bushes. now decoys in a field would probably help me get better video of the hunt, but I just don't like that style of hunting much.

My problems with Velcro have to do primarily with deer hunting, but also turkey hunting. Velcro isn't a problem with waterfowl hunting.

On deer hunting clothing, the best alternative to Velcro is rubber buttons. Buttons work great, and rubber buttons are very quiet.

My great uncle Mike hunted from the time he was old enough to legally hunt until his passing at 81. He never wore anything but red/black plaid Woolrich (hat, coat and pants)Northern rubber boots, never owned a deer call or used a single drop of cover scent. He carried a good weapon and killed more deer than anyone I know..........the old fashioned way. Hunting the woods, no shooting houses, ground blinds, etc.
He never owned a single piece of camo clothing in his life. LOL.

I have fallen for the latest/greatest gimmicks over the yrs. but am finding. Go back to the basics is working just fine for me as well, and I tag out every yr. with my deer kills.

It is a money making industry out there and the hunters are supporting it.

Shy of my GPS and maybe a trail cam, both help me to get to and locate deer. I can't think of a single other item I have purchased over the yrs. that actually walked a deer into my freezer.

Anything that is advertised on the outdoor channel! I laugh when the "pro" hunters tell me I have to this or this or this.
Take away the product placement in the videos and the cost on all these items would be way less.

The Butt Out tool is far from overrated. It's quite useful, actually. It was $10 well spent for me.

I had someone give me a butt out tool and I always left it in my truck so I never had it in the field. My brother shot a deer and brought it back without field dressing and I remembered to use it - it was much easier to use that then trying to cut around the anus. It went in my hunting bag (after it was cleaned).

+1 on the butt out tool. I think it's a worthless tool for people who don't know how to gut a deer.

What's really funny is watching someone who claims to know how to gut a deer, yet they can't figure out the right way to use the butt out tool because they lack a basic understanding of animal pooper anatomy. I've seen this several times.

The butt out tool has got to be one of the best tools I have ever used. Yes I fully understand how to cut around the anus and if I was packing in ultralight I would probably leave it at home. But in my daypack for a short trek to my stand it goes with me.

I saw that at SHOT Show!
The guy couldn't sell hardly any and ended up giving me one.
Never used it as I always seemed to remember to bring the inside of my elbow to cough in to.

I actually know the guy who invented that. My mother works with his wife. He might not have sold many at the SHOT show but he did sell enough to earn a royalty check every week. Not to mention he has quite a few offers yearly to hunt multiple species on another man's dime....goes to show there's a sucker born every minute
