Last year was the first year that I "hunted" morels. I never actually knew I had any on my place till I found a few while turkey hunting late in the season. I ended up getting quite a few (morels that is, not turkeys!), but I have a feeling it was pretty late in the morel season when I found them since several were past their prime.

So when is it productive to start looking for them? I'm guessing that some should start showing in a couple of weeks or so (I'm about 75 miles southwest of Nashville).

Be careful is all I can say to you. It is very, very easy to kill yourself.

As far as the time frame for prime harvest I would "guess" anywhere from June to August but I may very well be incorrect as I am not a morel expert.

I know that morels are a spring fungus, I just am not sure how early in spring.

The only mushrooms that look similar are the false morels, and they are actually pretty easy to tell apart from the real thing (real morels are completely hollow, the bottom edge of the cap is attached to the stalk, etc.). Morels are the only mushrooms that I will pick and eat, just because they are so distinctive from any other types.

go ahead and start looking.if it turns warm after the rain for a few days they should start poping up.talked to a guy today said they foud some this past weekend.in east tenn.

That's great to hear Chuck, it is getting harder and harder to find people with good "morels" these days..................there are a lot out there with false morels.

dont be scared knowledge is the key.there is no mistaking them once you know what they look like.man they taste great.ive never tried the ones in the store, but i heared they didnt taste as good as the wild ones[could be a freshness thing]

I grew up in south central Illinois. My friends and family hunted mushrooms since I was old enough to walk in the woods. I know of guys who are as serious about their mushrooms as they are their deer and turkey. I've never hunted them since I've lived in TN, but I know in Illinois they are already huntng for them. So, right now would be a good time to be looking in TN. I hope to find some this spring. They sure taste good!!

yep the oak trees are starting to bud, time to go looking. slice em and fry em like fish.

beware of the little mushrooms that grow in the barnyard, they'll make you see things that aint there.

I absolutely adore morels. I've never seen them in the store, except dried, which doesn't sound appealing. My father will pick up pounds of morels from some people around town and fry them up for me. I could eat them until I turned blue. Dad used to pick mushrooms all the time and never once poisoned anyone but morels are very easy to tell from false morels. Even I can do it.

Our season up here is far from near, though.

now is the time.

Havn't been this year but last year was the best year I can remember. I'm hoping this year will be another good year. Has anyone tried to dry them with a food dehydrator?

I am no expert, but the ones on the bottom part of the picture look different from the ones on top....Am I correct? I would say the bottom ones are false Morrels

I apologize...I dont know what I am talking about..A resident expert, that I work with, has informed me that those are okay.
He calls them "Black Morels".
I guess I should just keep quiet when I dont know what I am talking (or typing) about..
