I was driving home from hunting Monday evening when I saw a nice buck cross the road in front of me. He was leaving a piece of private ground and in to a section of public ground that I know pretty well. Since I'm on vacation this week, I decided to go after him in the morning. The buck had crossed in to a cedar thicket. My plan was to still hunt my way through the thicket until it opened up to a section of hardwoods. Then I was going to climb and spend the rest of the morning there.
As it got light, I started easing my way through the thicket. I didn't see a deer or bump any that I knew of. A little before 7:00, I made it through the thicket and in to a piece of hardwoods. As I sat there trying to pick out a tree for the morning, I spotted a doe running straight at me. Behind her was a set of antlers. The doe spotted me about 30 yards away and high tailed it the opposite direction. The buck was still standing there 40 yards away in a ditch. I could only see the top 2/3 of his shoulder but that was enough.
He is my biggest public land buck in TN by far. I'm still not sure if it was the buck I saw but it doesn't matter, I'm happy with him.
