Well, It's been years coming. I didn't start Hunting until I was 19. I was 29 when I took my first Deer. Over the last several years since 2005, I've took right around 30 Deer or a little over. I've been blessed to take 2 Nice 8 points, A non-typical 10 pointer on my wedding day, A 16 pointer, And a nice 6 pointer along with Does, Spikes, Buttons etc. But I always Dream that one day, I'll get "THAT DEER". That one Deer that defines your hunting career. I have no idea what this Buck will score, I know 125" is the minimum for Muzzleloader and I feel I have that here. Anyways to the story.
I lease some land in Meigs Co. and one of my favorite Spots is an old shooting house that more resembles something you'd build in your back yard for your kids to play in....Back in the 80's. But it holds up year after year and I come back to it. Anyways, Deer never come close enough during Archery, so I avoided it during this time except for one Saturday and saved it for opening day Muzzleloader. About 9:30 that morning a Doe stepped out of a pine thicket to my right and I shot her broadside with a 295 grain powerbelt right behind the leg. She ran off and I went down to look....Nothing. No blood, none whatsoever. I could of swore I hit that Deer. Looked for a long time never found it. Couldn't believed I missed. So I played Hookey from church the next day and about the same time 70 yards to my right a Button steps out broadside. I shoot him in the same spot. Go down, Nothing. I made 20-30 yards circles and found him piled up. Couldn't hardley find an entrance or exit hole. Like he wasn't even shot. Gutted him and found the holes. Later that following Tuesday I found my Doe when I followed some Buzzards flying into the woods. Same result. Deer was shot same spot but couldn't hardley find an exit or entry hole. So I went that evening and switched from 295 grain Powerbelts to 300 grain Hornady SST.
And now....The rest of the story.
That second day of Muzzeloader I had a Spike come up to my right just right at 7:00. Not daylight, But bright enough to see. When your a man my size in a little kids "play fort" you can't turn to your right and shoot. So I watched him walk off. Then one evening I had a Doe do the same trick and I could only helplessly watch.
Then finally Tues. November 19,2013 came around. My last day of vacation sat aside for Hunting. I went that morning about 30-40 minutes before sunrise, But the moon was so bright, It looked like you could've played a High School Football game there, I crept around the field and got blowed at right off the bat. So I finally got in the shoting house and got blowed at once more. Discouraged I thought "Well, I'm not at work today". So around 7:00 ish, I look again to my right and a fat bodied basket rack buck is standing broadside at 30 yards. Now this blind spot, The shooting house is facing forward to the field and a narrow, not even 9-10 yard trail goes out 75-80 yards at an angle to the shooting house. I watch this buck before he wonders off and I think, The only way I'm going to shoot a Deer there is to shoot left handed. And I've never shot left handed or with my left eye before ever. SO I hold my gun at the ready from then on with it in shooting position a left handed person would use. The next Deer coming out was getting it. So around 9:15 I look that way and see a Nose picking the ground and what appears to be the outline of a Deer. So I put the scope up and out steps this Monster, I immediately think "OH CRAP!!" in my head and I realize my saftey is on the wrong side of the gun, So I have to flip it to fire by reaching my index finger over the scope. This Buck steps out about 25 yards broadside and shooting left handed with my left eye, I put it right on the lungs and squeeze the trigger.... After the smoke cleared, I'm glad I chose Hornaday SST over the powerbelts. He left a blood trail Ray Charles coulkd follow. He went about 75 yards and piled up. I got down to him and I knew I finally had "That DEER". I had to wipe my eyes and give thanks to The Good Lord for Blessing me with this awesome opportunity.
Awesome year. In Feburary 2013, My wife and I welcomed twin girls into this world. And November I by far took my Best Buck ever. Thanks to friends, family and all the stories and advice I 've read here on TNDEER. God Bless and look forward to getting back out there this fall in 2014. And now you know, The rest of the story... GOOD DAY
