I shot a buck this morning at about 70yards. He was slightly quartering towards me. At the shot he droped but when i walked up he jumped up and took off, i fired missing him this time. No blood at the scene of the shot about 25yards away i found two very small drops of blood. I trailed him for a long ways following a drop here and there snd an ocasional spray. Sometimes itd be 20-30yards before i found the next spot. I eventually ended up jumping him up but couldnt see good and he gotaway. Where he had bedded down there was a puddle of bright red blood and following where he went was a fairly good bloodtrail for 20yards or so then it dried up.

I was useing a 7mm/08 shooting 140gr balistic tips. Iveherd horror stories on these bullets before, for the guys who have had trouble with btips whatd the trail look like? Any ideas what happend?

It's not the bullet you didn't give him enough time. Once you saw him get up needed to back off. And a quartering to you is a tough shot gotta place it perfect. I don't shoot ballistic tip any more but dad does and we have never had any trouble at all.

Yep. You should have scoped him and seen if he was still breathing. Then backed out. When they jump and run! You have got to back out! That is definite doubt so back out.

If you can scope him and he is still breathing let him have another!!

You have a dead deer sir. Go back in morning and start from last drop of blood . If water source is near start making circles you will find him. If you have access to a dog take it with you. I had same thing happen some years back . Found the stud next morning 75 yards from last spot

I shoot 7mm08 too . I was using federal ballistic tips when this happened . Switched to core locks never had issue again .

Idk why people are bashing ballistic tips they are great bullets it's all about shot placement. I do not shoot them any more i shoot the hornady sst and they are out standing. If you make a bad shot it does not matter what bullet you use.

Im tryin to not bash the bullets. Ive killed the majority of my deer with balistictips but thats from my 30-06 and dads 308. This was the first deer ive shot with the 7-08 so i didnt know if maby the smaller bullet may be more fragile compared to the 165gr 30 cal im use to. I wanna go back tomorro but its a 2hour drive there and im soposed to spend time with the wife and kids. We may have to tale a sunday drive and look for buzzards. I had my dad and a buddy with me while tracking him and they couldnt believe that it gotaway with the amount of blood lost when we jumped him the 2nd time. Dad acually saw the deer when we jumped him that last time and said all he could see was its a** end but it looked to be pushin the fromt of its body.

I just bought the gun about a month ago and bought these to use this year. There the 140gr federal premium balistictips. I shot 12 at the range and it loved em do i figured itd work. I plan on reloading for it as soon as i can find a set of dies. I will have to try accubonds when i start. Ive herd alot of good stuff about em. I loaned my 30-06 out to a friend for his first hunt or i think id be celebrateing a kill right now. I trust a 30cal alot more hunting that area. I shot him in a swamp and the area he ran to was clearcut last year and has alot of dead tree tops down that didnt help with the tracking.

if you hit him in the same place with that 30-06 that you did with the 7mm08, the results would have been the same.

One of these days people will realize that ballistic tips are not a good choice unless you have a perfect broadside shots every time. Ballistic tips and shoulder bones dont mix

One of these days people will not blame the bullet for bad shot placement. I know people mess up with shots but don't blame the bullet blame yourself.

sometimes it IS the bullets fault.

Ok just my 2cents, if there is a large hole in a deers side there will be blood. I have shot deer with ballistic tips, lead tips, and solid lead bullets, put one of any of them through the shoulder and its over. I know its the brooms fault the floor gets dirty.

Go figure....i shot one with a 22-250 at 11:00am and she hit the ground DRT. I've lost deer with a 7mag before. Sorry to hear you lost yours...it happens to everybody!

I don't see how you can blame h bullet with the RIGHT shot placement there is no excuse. The bullet preformed right he found blood he knocked the deer down obviously it just wasn't a good fatal hit. I hate it for the dude we have all been there but it's not the bullet it's the placement of the bullet.

I shot SP rounds for years out of my 25-06, then switched the Federal Prem Ballistic tips. I killed 8 deer over 6 years but I lost 7 deer using Ballistic tips over a 5 year period. Some were broadside or quartering one way or another from 30-220 yards. one that sticks out the most to me, was a doe that was broadside to slight quartering away in a open field @ 119 yards. I had a perfect rest on a ladder stand. at the shot she jumped straight up and muled kicked then ran with her head down about 70 yards into the woods. went to last place i seen her and seen red blood every where, i followed it over 150 yards thru the woods till she crossed over a field with water in it and I couldn't track any more. I looked for another 2 hrs where she was going from the last blood and no luck. I switched to Win Prem 110gr Accubonds and have not had a problem. I've killed 19 deer and i've only lost one and it was during low light and I thought I had a clear lane but after the shot I seen the limb that I hit first before just nicking the deer. All others never run more than 40 yards.

If you think the ballistic tips are the problem then i highly recommend hornady sst's they are outstanding! But like a said we have never had any problem with ballistic tips. The only deer I've ever lost was with core lock and it was diffenetly my fault bad shot placement.

keep using b.t. and you will lose one from what seems to be the perfect shot. ribs are bones too and if this bullet hits one on impact you will probably not have a blood trail to follow.
