Ok, I shot a pretty good buck on Saturday morning. Thought it was a good shot, but when I got down all I found was lots of hair and some small chunks of meat. I eventually starting finding some blood drops and then three chunks of bone (different spots). The blood trail also picked up after a while, but I gave up after about 5-1/2 hours of trailing when I lost the blood trail. There were several places where I found good pools of blood before the trail just ended. My buddy brought his dog and we picked up some more blood, but still was unable to recover the deer. Someone told me that a deer shot in the leg (what I assume happened based on the type of bone I found) will likely not die. Can anybody confirm this? By the way, I did take out a coyote the day before and then redeemed myself the next morning with a 92 lb. doe.

Sounds like a leg hit to me. I've seen some three legged deer before, but couldn't tell what caused the amputation. If he does live I would expect the rack to be messed up next year.

No way to confirm anything without the deer, but def sounds like a non lethal leg shot.
