I don't know about now, but when I was in service and you went
to the small arms course. All were required to shoot the M1
with open sights at 500 yards.

I shot a doe at 90 yards one time with open sights.
It was with a Marlin lever action chambered in the 450 Marlin though.

Impressive. The first deer I ever killed was with an old British .303 with iron sights. Missed the first one at what seemed like a mile then but was probably 150 - 200 yards max. Chambered another and bang...took the top of its head off. Nothing but luck for sure but I was tickled to death.

Last year I shot a spike at 115 yards with a Swiss K-31, stock military iron sights.
